Quote from: "bigun007"I am 20.

I was only 23 when I got my 2 (though 22 when I was getting insurance quotes). The biggest quote was £8700 from Tesco, but I managed to get one for around £600 from Admiral. At the time I had three years no claims and everything else was clean.

Quote from: "bigun007"Accident in December 2002

That's a bit of a problem.

Quote from: "bigun007"1 Year NCB altho some refuse to accept it as was a 10 month "Bonus Accelorator"

Check the small print on your policy for the 10 month bonus. AFAIA you pay for 10 months and effectively get 12. It is the quickest was to get your full NCB. So you have a full years no claims, that's all they need to know.

s:roll:  s:roll:  Then you do have mods. A lot of peoples 2's came with leather seats, locking wheel nuts and air con. All of these are mods. All of these must be declaired.

A mod is anything which the bog standard 2 didn't come with. It's not "have you modified it", it's "has the car been modified". These include optional extras.

Oh.....weird, i was always told that they don't count as the car comes with them from the factory/dealer

Try Toyota Insurance, they were the best for me by £500!

Think about it. Lets say that your 2 goes up in a big ball of flames. You claim on your insurance. The insurance company's information (that you gave them) tell them that there are no mods on your car. They can only then presume that your 2 was 100% bog standard, and that is what they will pay out for.

Anything that isn't 100% bog standard is a modification, and, as I said earlier, this includes optional extras.

Also, it is worth bearing in mind that some standard features can help lower your quote. Take the locking wheel nuts for example. Some insurance companies will actually lower your premium if you declare this as a mod.

I'd definitely tell them about the exhaust, though probably not about the leather.  Its like Peter said its the car they base the premium on, and they base that on a standard car.  If you can you may as well tell them about everything, most companies won't charge for little bits and pieces.

By the way I pay £950 with Tesco, and i'm 23 now.  And I have 6 points  s:oops:  s:oops:  the TTE exhaust, £2,000 stereo equipment & misc.  I have full & protected NCB

Mine's a bit more steep than £600, but I've little NCB and had a big prang not too long ago.   Mines with Zurich and is around £900.  I didn't get a better quote of anyone when it came to renew.

Just changed mine to Highway via Adrian Flux and it was £450 with mods declared.

I just wonder whether Bigun should have somebody else (parent?) as the policyholder and then him as a named driver, would it make much difference?  Then build up the no claims as the main driver when your older.
Title:
Post by: Anonymous on March 24, 2004, 09:20
Apparently that's a BIG no no   s:( :( s:(

Companies don't have to pay out if they think you are more than an "Occasional Driver".

Also as the car is registered in my name it might look a little dodgy?

Post by: markiii on March 24, 2004, 09:24
adding older drivers as second drivers often helps, even if they never use it. The fact that they can means thats less time you may driving it.

try mom or dad. worked for me in the past.

Adding my mum cut about £500 off my quotes for a '2.

Adding my dad aswell put £100 onto the premium (so £400 saved instead of £500). On other cars adding him also reduced it so might be worth a try.

Probably worth getting quotes online instead of ringing up as lots of insurers give discounts for this.

My mate (who's about 28 ) added his mum to his insurance and she brought the cost down for him aswell (he has a rover 200). She doesn't even have a driving license - it's crazy.

I agree, im 26, 1yr NCB, Exhaust, Filter, Bodykit, and was quoted £1500 by Norich Union, £1300 (without mods) by Asda and Tesco.. Elephant offered £750!

I snapped their arm off! That includes all mods too!  s:D :D s:D

I've said it before, but I'll say it again.

the likes of elephant will allow mods for a premium, but don't actually cover the value of them. i.e if you right it off you won't get the value of te mods back.

If you happy with that fine, but be aware of it.

Note that applies to almost all insurers; only very specialist policies, usually obtained via knowledgable brokers, will actually cover mods value (and other non-standard benefits, eg pre-agreed valuations, for particularly special cars).

not something they make clear though unless you ask.

teh assumption is if your paying for it it's covered.

My Chaucer policy  through DIG covers all mods direct replacement part for part, so a good option if you have spent a fair bit of dosh on your mota

From the amount of PM's I keep getting about mods, ie how to and where from, I think there will be a fair few modded cars on here soon so could be useful.

Its a shame they feel they have to PM these questions rather than post publicly? I've had to empty my in/outbox 4/5 times and I've only been here 5 mins (its a pain)

But dont worry guys I'll keep answering the questions if I can and one day you'll all feel brave enough to come out of the closet....hopefully.
