Title: Reg Plate - Personalisation
Post by: Anonymous on March 27, 2004, 19:23
Hi peeps.

After being at the treasure hunt I noticed several different styles of regplate, and thought about changing ours from the norm.  I particually liked Liz's style.  I am looking at

I have been looking on http://www.fancyplates.com and have knocked the following three as shortlists.  Opinions?

Are these going to be legal (will I get my collar felt).  I will be using standard spacing, and the legal UK font.  So its really if I will get pulled for not having the manufactures name.

When mine are far from legal!!   s:oops:  s:oops:

You are not meant to have anything other than the Euro GB, anything else is naughty, I got mine from fancy plates, but if you want an opinion on the above I like the ones with the union flag on.

Yeah, did like yours!.  I would hope that due to having correct spacing and font, would limit my chance of being pulled.

Great day today Liz!!!  Car needs another wash though now.

AFAIK you can only have the GB and euro signs, I will have a chat to a friendly traffic officer, although TBH you are more likely to get pulled it you have those illegibal italic plates, they are more tugworthy for the police, especially down Sarfend seafront, I suppose you can read mine that is why for now that I have got away with it...so far, famous last words etc! You aren't even meant to have other lettering on the plate, like the celica at the bottom of the ones above.

having asked this question last year of fancy plates.

If there is anything non road legal about what you want, they WONT make it with a road legal font.

IIRC, there were moves last year or the year before to limit what you can have on the panel on the left to just the euro flag and the GB. This caused a huge stink in Scotland, where people had been happily buying plates with saltires and 'ecosse' on them. It was a big thing in certain Scottish tabloids, and it led to some low scale civil disobedience as everyone went out to buy plates with whatever they damn well wanted on. The issue was quietly dropped by the government, and I *believe* you can have whatever you want on the panel. Personally, I have a saltire, euro flag, and 'GB' on mine. Just to piss off the europhobes   s:D :D s:D

Just a point of correctness Liz, it is the 'Union' flag it is only called the Union jack when shown on a Jack pole.  s:wink:  s:wink:

Here is the official plate information
 http://www.dvla.gov.uk/vehicles/regmarks/reg_marks_current_requirements.htm#europlate

The Government announced on 28 December 2001 the intention to permit the display of national flags and national identifiers on vehicle number plates. The Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001 are in the process of being amended. They will provide for the voluntary display of the Union flag, Scottish Saltire, Cross of St George and Red Dragon.

I actually have 'Choice 3' - got it from Fancy Plates as well.  The only difference is that rather than go with the solid blue for the Toyota logo on the left hand side, I have gone for a silver-to-black gradient instead - looks the nuts (IMHO)   s8) 8) s8)

sssooooorrrryyyyyy  - post edited, I have taken 20 lashes. As a point of correctness if you are referring to when it is flown from the bow of a Royal Navy war ship it is actually called a jack staff   s:wink:  s:wink:

Back on topic now then!

Cool, thanks, I have just tried it that way, does look good.  The only reason I did the knock ups in blue is cos of our blue car.  Black to Silver does look good!

I think I must have got lucky then!   s:D :D s:D   Although I expect there's every chance they've changed their policy in the last 2 years.
I had a standard 6 character plate made up in the new font without the space in the middle.. they did call me to query that was exactly what I wanted and not a typo, but did it all the same!

Hi,
I doubt very much whether you would get pulled for any of those plates. Most will only stop you for something obvious like a number that can't be read easily or is misleading or italic or if youv'e really hacked them off  s:twisted:  s:twisted:
Plates 1 or 3, uncluttered and smart

This pedant's favourite is a common misconception. I myself used to trot it out frequently, without ever bothing to do the research to see if I was correct. One day about five years ago, I had some spare time on my hands, and a little research revealed that all along I had been incorrecting people.

The flag institute states thus:

It is often stated that the Union Flag should only be described as the Union Jack when flown in the bows of a warship, but this is a relatively recent idea. From early in its life the Admiralty itself frequently referred to the flag as the Union Jack, whatever its use, and in 1902 an Admiralty Circular announced that Their Lordships had decided that either name could be used officially. Such use was given Parliamentary approval in 1908 when it was stated that "the Union Jack should be regarded as the National flag".
