Looked at a few secondhand MR2's this weekend - one a black 2002 the other a silver 2001, both of which had black cloth - sure I read that UK black and silver 2's should come with red cloth or black/red leather - does this mean there imports?
Uk can come with whatever the purchaser requested.
Hi,
I think (Don't hit me Mark) that early example cars such as mine (Purchased in Nov 2000) if bought in the UK only could come in combination of Silver / Red Cloth interior.
Now mine came from Belgium (via Motorpoint) and had Black cloth interior (very nice I may add).
As for later models, this may not be the case and Marks point could well be true for later model issues.
Mark where cloth colour options on Silver / Black available pre-facelift, as the original brouchres I had, had a very limited combination set ?
Cheers
Darren
You could order whatever you liked, but toyota 'recommended' red for the silver car. I have the old brochure at home, i'll dig it out and take a look.
Oh, I'll check as well, thought it was a set in stone thing, as I was more than pleased when mine turned up with black cloth, much more practical than the red :-) :-) :-) (No offence red interior owners)
But to answer marc, there is very little difference between Euro vehicles and UK vehicles, just make sure you check all the paperwork, as euro ones will come with a certificate of conformity (if they have been a good owner like me) they will have every peice of paper work on the vehicle.
also look for Roadster Badge on rear, euro cars didn't get this as standard.
apart from that no difference, expect the euro buyers will have saved about £4k on the original asking price (sweet!!!).
Cheers

Isn't there something about insurance as well???
I am sure that I have read that some companies will only insure EU imports & not Japanese (or could have been the other way round)
I am sure that someone on here will/can clarify, but it may be worth checking before you buy s:) :) s:)

Dug out my MR2 brochure (printed 2000) and it definetly states thats silver and black cars come with red cloth (or black/red leather option) all other colour 2's have black cloth (or black/red leather option)? If it is an import what else should I be looking out for, paperwork wise? Would it be better being an EU import rather than a Japanese import?
It's definately better going for an EU import if it is less than three years old as the wattantywill still be valid, and they are generally higher spec than the JDM cars. They are also a lot easier and cheaper to insure.
As for the paperwork, the initial delivery documents should there be any will have the originating dealers stamp on it which will give you an idea, but the easiest way is to copy down the chassis number and take it to a Toyota dealer.. they will be able to look it up and tell you which market (UK, EU, JDM) the car came from.
An EU Import is essentially the same as the UK car. (in fact it IS the same car - and dont let any clueless Toyota Tech. tell you otherwise...)
The key differences between UK/EU cars (I'm talking 2000-2003 here - not sure about the later model) are the ones the Toyota GB add at the port when it arrives. Toyota GB obtain all thier MR2's as EU spec, and then add:
Big Sony Stereo
Alarm, (with siren in the front luggage bay)
Glass Etching
Roadster Badge
Locking wheel nuts.
Plus a couple of other things I cant remember.
If your car is missing these, particularly the alarm as the others are easy to add yourself, it's probabley an EU import.
Another giveaway is the leather interiors if fitted. UK cars are embossed with the "roadster" logo. Mine (from Denmark) are embossed "MR".
So the UK and EU cars are the same beast, apart from the small fortune saved by the original purchaser. Warranty is the same for all EU cars, insurance is unaffected as the car was first registered in the UK and it has an EU certificate of conformity.
Jap-spec cars are a slightly different beast...
They tend to be imported as second hand cars, with all service history in Japanese... They arent type approved like the UK/EU cars, so they have to be put through an SVA test. Insurers may charge extra for them as they are a grey import. The theres the differences in spec. You're unlikely to get an un molested J-spec car, the japanese are mod crazy. The giveaway to a J-spec car is it doesn't have a 3rd O2 sensor after the main Cat. Thats not the only difference though, there are dozens...

Is this so?!?!?! I have a EU 2002 import and it needs a service soon and I was going to just take it to my local garage but if it its still under warranty I suppose it should be a MR-T job.
All EU cars have a pan-european 3 year warranty. Thats applicable even when they come to the attention of Toyota GB's ranches, I mean, dealerships.
correct all in eu impiorts have a 3 year warranty.

Yes, totally correct - I can confirm that I've had loads of warranty work done on my Euro Import without any problems at all, as I'm sure others on the forum have too! All I had to provide was the registration document, and a receipt for purchase I think.
