is there any gadget which will stop the thump noise produced buy switching the amp on and off or should this noise not happen at all.
p.s. currently using a cheapo splx amp for a test run of my custom system but it will be replaced with a better amp once/if fully working

Cheapos usually make that...and it's "easy" to fix. You need to put relays on the amp outputs and turn them on a second or so after the amp and turn them off a second or so before the amp. That way the thump never reaches the speakers..
Up to you, if you think it's worth the trouble s;) ;) s;)
chears tem
i might go for it as part of the install, when i get a proper amp.

You probably don't have to do that with a good amp s;) ;) s;)
shouldnt get a pop sound or thud when the amps turn on !!
means that the MOSFET's of the amp are BUSTED !!!!!!!!

Many cheapos do that...even when they are ok s:? :? s:?
is it worth adding relays with a better amp or add the extra money to an even better amp

Probably not, as they won't have that problem to begin with...
