Title: advice please?
Post by: Anonymous on April 19, 2004, 16:42
Hi everyone
I know there have been lots of treads on this subject and have read most
of them... BUT i wanted some more help as I'm completely new at this buying cars business.
anyway i've decided on a brand new roadster in sable with metallic paint, a/c , leather seats and trimmings.
what  would be a reasonable price for all this ?
is air conditioning really that useful?
any other tips so that i don't get conned out of my money?
 thanks
kathy

kathy ... I personally do not see the point in AC on a roadster although I am sure others will disagree!  I have the roof down as often as possible so the AC would be of little to no use!

Go for Sable its a good color although Silver is better  s;) ;) s;) !

Are you buying brand new?

Dont pay extra for metalic paint... no one does!

AC is great - i miss it.

Look to pay around £15,500ish for your '2 plus extras. I would try and haggle half price on your accessories. Then get petrol & car mats thrown in.

If not, walk away and go to the next dealer   s:wink:  s:wink:

If you are looking for Sable then you may want to consider the Red Roadster edition with red roof interior, steering wheel etc.  But it's not to everyone's taste.

Please don't buy a black one, I like to be in a minority  s:wink:  s:wink:

Off the top of my head (so probably rubbish then    s:P :P s:P   )...

List price is (someone correct me) £17000?  "Buy" price (ie. price you should be looking to pay) for a plain vanilla manual roadster is about £15700.  Now add to this £500 for leather, £900 for a/c and £250 for the metallic paint.  I make that £17350. Tell them your target price is £16500.  I don't know if you'll get it, but if you don't ask....

Is the a/c necessary?  Well, depends on you really.  I've been quite happy without it.  Other people think it's essential.  I'm sure it does make a difference, but I preferred to keep the £900

Tips:  erm.... don't be bullied.  Be prepared to walk away.  Go to more than one dealer.  Others probably have better suggestions!

£15,500 base surely?  s:? :? s:?  Then add leather, air and hardtop if interested.

Personally on a hot day I have the top down and the air on. It gets hot under the sun! Well worth the extra IMO.

Yep, the Roadster Red looks like a prettly good deal – plus they'll be rare ('2s are anyway  s:lol:  s:lol:  ). Sable, red hood, red leather and red/black leather steering wheel. Not sure if they have air but you could specify it. And 'Red' badges under the side indicators.

Alright Kathy! Nice to see you plucked up the courage to get on here then (after much persuasion from me)!!! Go with what the guys said and make sure you don't get bullied into anything. Have a ceiling price and don't go over that. If the dealer doesn't want to match it, walk away.

Also guys, some advice on WHAT to say to the dealer would be good for Kathy. I know her well and I think this is more of a worry (am I right Kathy?). So, basically a quick crash course on HOW to buy a car would be good. I have only ever bought second hand, so I am not a lot of help on this.

Be gentle with her. It took me a lot to get her THIS far!!!  s:wink:  s:wink:    s:lol:  s:lol:

Definatly get air-con. Reduces misting on cold winter days very quickly.

Hi Kathy, welcome!

I'm one of those who would be very upset if I didn't have A/C in my car, I love it.
I use it more in winter than I do in summer (with this car).
A/C is great in the cold for clearing the windscreen quicker.
And any other times when you've a bit of moisture inside, or steamy windows (cue TT!) then A/C does the bizzo, it's simply the best (on a TT roll   s:D :D s:D  )

I would advise against buying new, purely from a depreciation point of view as you will be losing money the second you drive the car off the forecourt.  I would suggest going  for a nearly new one if possible and buy a TRD stage 1 bodykit, TTE twin exhaust and TTE lowering springs with the money you save   s8) 8) s8)

Sundance   s8) 8) s8)

I found that nearly new 2's were not a lot cheaper than having a brand spanker. Didn't get as good a deal as some but paid £16100 with leather and metallic. I like air con but didn't think it justified the huge extra cost; especially as in the summer the roof is going to be down. Is only useful for clearing the windcreen in winter; but does this justify £900 or whatever it is now.

Regarding handling the dealers just tell them from the off that you have a good price from brokers (you can get quotes from the ads in the back of car mags) who usually offer close to the best prices, and you want them to match it. Be prepared to walk away and know what the highest price that you are willing to pay. I believe a 8% discount is the going rate. And it would be better to do it know as they like to boost they're figures up close to the end of the month. They will look to see if they're is one available in the country to the spec you want. Finally silver is the best colour to go for  s:wink:  s:wink:

A/C is essential, as Victor said, for demisting, or keeping cool in a motorway jam etc etc.

For easy good deals, try Trade Sales or Motor Point.  Make sure that the cars are new.

Unless anything has changed in the last couple of years, these are the same as UK cars, minus alarm, locking nuts and stereo - Fit your own choice, it can't be any worse than the Toyota stuff - plus safety pack.  And they carry the same 3 year wty.

Paid 18k for new 03 silver with hardtop and a/c but no leather. Can't remember the base price for car but apparently dealers have 10% in accesories (leather etc). As mentioned before best time to buy end of month. Once you've worked out a figure you want to pay don't be discouraged if the first dealer turns you down, 2 wouldn't take me on at this price but third time lucky  s:) :) s:)  .
If you are tempted by an import check the spec Northen European cars Dutch etc are close to UK spec whilst Southern European (Spanish etc) imports can differ quite a bit. Some obvious things that can be missed out on imports are locking wheel nuts, stereo or alarm.
