well, I got my new toy put in (finally)

anyhoo... Just to test it out, i brought the cheapo obd2 reader off fleabay. (blue and orange one with the lights)
Torque's site says you can have problems with the build quality of these units and they are cheapo components! Kinda have to be for a little over £12!
so, you plug it in and the ABS goes bananas! After a bit of digging, I found out that the reader (maybe not others) scans all the pins looking for the ecu.
Problem is on turning on the ignition the ABS ecu wants to talk to something and throws its toys out of the pan when it sees something it cant talk too.
I tried the flicking the ignition on and off trick others have been doing but wouldn't work for me.
so, not wanting to unplug it all the time i decided to remove the pins the OBD2 reader doesn't need.
Below image is the 2 pins that are needed to be taken out. Also a good use for the passenger window on/off switch (OMG how pointless)
is to loop the +12 feed to the port through it. have a nice little reader on/off switch then s:) :) s:)
remove the pins by using a little screwdriver to open the side flap then you can pull the wires out buy holding back the little plastic clips on the inside of the port connector.
put tape round the ends so they wont earth out, Job done!
This has the bonus of if you need toyota to look at your ABS at some point, you can just put the pins back in within 10 mins.

Must be a little off? I know it will never work out bhp accurately..
Looks good!!
What unit is that? What's it capable of? (I'll google for that bit if you have a model name? s:D :D s:D )
Thanks s:) :) s:)
its an acer iconia a100. Took ages to find a tablet with BT,wifi,GPS and android 3.2
you need at least 2.3. If you have 2.2, market place wont be installed without hacks. It's 2.2 as that it lacks in memory/cpu spec for google to give the manufacture rights to android 2.3+
Ooo! I will be trying this next weekend, if it does work I will be able to start my car without having to do the 3 key flick trick.
Hi Mr X,
Just what I needed. However, I'd like to take the pins off my cheapo bluetooth OBD2 connector rather than modify my car. Can you tell me the pin numbers that you removed?
I got a cheapo Bluetooth/OBDII reader/transmitter off ebay a few months ago, that works perfectly Ok with Torque on my HTC straight from the box without any pin hacking.
I'll post the make (or what I can find of it) tonight should it help anybody.
<edit> This is it. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/OBD2-Diagnostic-tool-Bluetooth-Wireless-CAR-Scanner-B15-/290431516867?pt=UK_Diagnostic_Tools_Equipment&hash=item439f1140c3
I get the error message too, sometimes but not all the time
ABS warning light

That looks exactly like the one I have .... but mine thinks it's 'chico time' and communicates to me through my ABS light s:( :( s:(
Just noticed that one is version 1.3, do you know your chipset version? Mine is 1.4 ... I think.

I'll check the box, but bought it from the same guy 15 months ago!
This is the one i have, its v1.5 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/220917196679?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649#ht_5347wt_944
maybe the versions before 1.4 don't try to scan these pins for an ecu. From what ive read on other car sites (non mr2), the pins are normally plugged into ecu can bus for but with toyota, they used them to comm with the ABS ecu instead hence ABS wobbler.
here is a pic of the pins on the reader:
I will double check the earths but i'm sure that's correct.
Thanks, I take it that it's the ABS pins to remove.
When I have time, I'm going to put a multimeter in series to find out how much current the thing draws when the ignition is off.
yeah, is the abs ones. might be an idea to pull the wires from the plug fist to double check. Or wait till sat so i can take the plug off mine to confirm. wouldn't want you to bust a good reader s;) ;) s;)
also, i made a little video on youtube

That would be kind of you, don't want to waste £12! s:D :D s:D
It does look cool in your vid, wish I had the money to do it. s:( :( s:(
haha well, the £12 would buy the fiberglass and the filler to make the pod. All you need then is leather cloth, glue and some cardboard to make a template/mold s;) ;) s;)
not that expensive to make mate. Just the cost of what you want to put in it really. my sis just got an android tablet off ebay for 35 quid! yeah, its pants but would run torque ok! s:bounce: :bounce: s:bounce:
s:D :D s:D Pulled these two wires today and no more flashing ABS light and no need to flick the key on and off three times before I can start the engine, all is well so well worth the few minutes it took to do, so thanks Mr X
no probs mate s:) :) s:) glad someone else now hasn't got to have an epileptic fit with their key in their hand every time they want to start their car! lol
I've been reading a few threads including the 'getting started' guide and that says to buy one of these OBD2 readers when you are looking to buy. I have seen a few on eBay for like £20 but unsure if they are any good, they look kinda cheap but I suppose they are! What is the best one at the best price that can do the stuff I would need when looking to buy and maintenance?
Would I use it when I'm looking for a car even when no engine management light comes on?
Where is the ECU / connection in the car to plug it into??
Thanks s:) :) s:)
Its is true, you get what you pay for. The ebay ones like I have, the quality of the components inside are not the best. but you save a packet! There have been reports of them not working correctly and there is an "obd errors" screen in the app that tells you if it is broken. Just send it back if it's faulty!
Some codes are hidden and don't cause the light to come on so it would be a bonus. Saying that tho, if the seller does know about them, a simple battery disconnect would clear the errors and you will be none the wiser.
The plug is under the steering wheel to the right, you can't miss it s:) :) s:)
What one do you have?
I have an iPhone so I take it I can't use the bluetooth ones as they work with Android...
On eBay:
I can see the orange and black ones for ~£17
Or a stubby black and silver one for ~£23
Quicklinks T40 yellow and black one for ~£25
Black one with a blue sticker for ~£25
etc etc..!
What ones are good?
iPhone s:lol:  s:lol: Sorry but I find them the most useless restrictive POS ... anyway ...
This is the bluetooth one I bought :

(The U380 will also work with your 2, the U480 also works with cars with CAN-BUS)
Both cheap. Both do the job. s:D :D s:D

mine is the orange one for £17. They should work with anything that has BT and can run apps/software. Obviously i know Torque works on android, i don't know if there is a version for iOS. The adapter itself comes with windows software xp/vista/win7 and i'm also pretty sure you can get WindowsCE software too...
Followed guide from Mr.X and working great im using the LapLogger app on the iphone via Wifi its not perfect, and the MPG fuclates .. which might be the software or the reader. Any other software I could use on the iphone ?? DashCMD and Reve are £30 each ... way too much !!!
Just got a great bit of Software was £3.99 called Engine Link seems to do the job right and the MPG Calculator is better but my average was only 26mpg today but for 10miles + warm-up I suppose that aint that bad.
I got the same OBD2 reader as op. What you mean by looping the 12v+ live? I don't want go fiddle around under dashboard and break something!
Cant you do the same job by opening obd2 reader and remove the pins? how did I find this out? I broke mine! there is 4 screws under the sticker.
I ordered new one.
Actually I had a look inside the obd2 blue tooth reader, you need to remove 1 'abs' pin which is #14 in obd2 pinout in OBD2 reader by opening it up and remove the pin '#14' in connector connecting to board. don't forgot to tape it up or cut it off. other ABS pin #9 is not connected in this obd2 blue tooth reader.
How reliable is the figures for MPG and BHP on these guys?
For MPG I would think pretty accurate as it's just reading it off the ECU and that knows how much fuel is going in and the speed. To be honest though I've never directly compared it to my fuelly stats.
No idea on BHP but I suspect not accurate at all. In fact I don't remember ever seeing it on my reader.
hmmm interesting, does it work off an android phone too? Would like to know what I'm getting fuel wise.
Yep, unfortunately it doesn't work with my iPhone so I use my work Android phone with Torque App.
To be honest though I found it a bit of a faff for fuel efficiency checking so just use Fuelly instead. s:) :) s:)
Probaly a cheaper way of doing it to be honest, I'll be using that too then. Cheers Andy!
Thanks for the info and help on here.
Hi Folks
Old thread, but this seemed like a good place to post. I just bought one of these: m http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/331568374015? ... EBIDX%3AIT (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/331568374015?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT) m
It works fine in my Skoda but when I connect it to the MR2, Torque says it can't talk to the ECU. The ABS light flashes but goes out if I flick the key. Do I have to solve the ABS light problem to get it talking to the ECU?
.
To make mine work I had to plug it in after ignition was on. I removed the abs pins and leave it plugged in all the time now, or at least while I'm running my engine in, I like to monitor certain parameters while I'm still in super cautious mode
I disconnected pin 14 (apparently "CAN (J-2234) Low") on my reader and it stopped the ABS light flashing but the reader still can't connect to the ECU. I don't think I'm going to have any luck with this one. As it happens, I bought 2 different ones on ebay so we'll see how the other one does when it arrives.
Hello. My first post here. I also disconnected pin 14, but am getting bad data back from the device. Torque connects but the numbers are all negative and non moving. OBD Doctor gives accurate Voltage, but try anything else and it crashes. I've been using the OBD doctor Console, which lets you talk to the device like a old skool modem and the car is responding but not as it should. Going to try disconnecting the CAN high pin also, as the airbag light is on. Will let you know how I go.
Hi I'm having the same issues!
I bought the following reader: m http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/OBD2-OBD-II-B ... 3a8ff2449c (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/OBD2-OBD-II-Bluetooth-Car-Scanner-ELM327-v1-5-Super-Mini-Adapter-Android-Torque-/251523122332?hash=item3a8ff2449c) m
I've installed the free Torque app and the reader appears to pair to my device but doesn't communicate to it. I have the ABS issue others appear to have so plug the reader in after starting the engine to avoid.
I've gone on the settings and chosen bluetooth under the connection setting, and the OBD2 option under Device. When I try and reader and app on a 2014 Fiesta it works, so I struggle to understand what's stopping from working with the MR2!
I've just been through this process with 2 different readers and given up with those. The good news is that the white pro-scan one from ebay does work.
I've managed to break my trusty old OBD dongle s:( :( s:( I left it plugged in and I kept kicking it getting in and out of the car...I took it apart but couldn't see anything wrong.
So I've ordered this one
(http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/09/04/9b3d2439fc09c3ae895e28c8ddc67120.jpg)
m http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/231553464641?_mwBanner=1 (http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/231553464641?_mwBanner=1) m
Not sure if it will work but it's shorter (so I won't keep kicking it!)
I will report back
Arrived quickly and works perfectly with no issues, connected straight to my phone and works with all my cars s:D :D s:D
Just need to do the Pin mod as I get PAS and ABS lights when left plugged in
Hi, although a bit of a thread ressurection....Am I right in saying that if I plug my bluetooth OBD2 in AFTER ive started the engine I shouldn't have any issues with ABS lights etc going mental? Engine Check light came on this morning FFS, I've only had it a week and covered about 90 miles!
After I've sorted this issue, whatever it is, Does the Pinmod then allow youto have the module plugged in all the time without detriment to the data come off it? I've bought a spare one the same as Meeerrrk to mod to be able to have in there all the time (Future Android head unit planned).
Cheers
RockingDad
If you plug in after engine start you shouldn't have any problems.
Not all readers have that issue anyway.
I have the one pictured above which I can't leave plugged in and another which is slightly larger but causes no issues.
ok cheers s:) :) s:)
A bit me being lazy, but will this pin14 for abs also cause airbag light issues? I get no abs issue with the current readers I own, but the airbag light is on dim... something I'm not overly keen on.. and I want the obd2 in permanently for datalogging.
Mine does the same.
Mind, it used to set the ABS light off and it stopped doing that... Which is odd
I've just tried cutting the pin, no luck, the abs doesn't come on, but the airbag light still does, I've no idea how it effects the actual function so I won't be using these adaptors and will stick to my old one that is just big.. i'll just move the obd2 port so that I stop kicking it when I get in the car haha..
Best one I had was the WiFi dongle with lead. It didn't work on Android, so sold it. Now I regret selling it and wish I had just kept it permanently attached with my old iPhone5 in the glove box
This is the issue, I need a Bluetooth that works with android as I want to use it with harrys lap timer for track use ... at the moment I have one huge reader that works perfectly, but only logged at 1hz, I was hoping the mini's would log quicker because they are faster units, but it seems the limitation to 1hz is the car itself as these blues don't log any quicker anyway.. so i'll put my large one back on and just move the port behind the dash or something s:) :) s:) if I resolve the issue i'll post any findings.
Interesting that the car limits the speed. That answers my question as to whether I should spend the cash on a OBDLINK MX.. Granted, 100 PIDs per second probably does make it quicker
I think on the older cars it was purely about reading codes, modern cars are aware that data logging is needed and so they run faster communications. i'd love to know if anyones got better than 1hz out the mr2.. and if so how.. I get 5-10hz out my corsa with the same mini adaptor.
I ended up getting an OBDLink MX Bluetooth reader as I wanted my screen to read faster.... I still have a galaxy tab s2 8.0 mounted into the dash. Cost me £80 from the states.... read speed is 6 reads per second! I gained 1 read a sec over the £17 ebay one. The only benefit is that it works perfectly and it's very small. It's always plugged in and I've never kicked it getting into the car. I used to clobber the old one every time!

So it's not faster at all?
My little blue ebay special works fine so if it doesn't actually read noticeably quicker, not wasting cash

Can you do me a favour and download Harry's lap timer, add the obd2 device and leave it connected for a few mins then see the reported connection speed? Everything I've tried comes back 1hz on the mr2, ID pay £80 for 6hz
Nope, just the same speed as the cheapo ones. I was rather disappointed s:roll:  s:roll:

No problem but is there a free version of this app? s:) :) s:)
Sorry, I thought there was, but I've just had a look and they all appear to be paid for services. if you do any track-time i'd recommend the app massively, but obviously wouldn't expect you to get it to test for me.. bit of a shame.. oh well, 1hz it is.. I have 10hz gps anyway, and that's mostly what I'm interested in, RPM and throttle position were really the only things I need through OBD2, and being 1hz they're a bit useless, so i'll stick to gps only s:) :) s:)
