hello,
i went for a test drive at my local dealers yesterday and loved it even though it wasn't a brand new one!! they haven't got a demo at the moment, useless!!
anyway i 99% sure i want a new one with met.paint, leather and AC, so i asked them what there best deal was blah, blah. I've also got a mk1 G reg
in fairly good condition so asked what i could get for it.
after reading all the mails on this site i thought 16500 for a new car and between 1000 and 1500 for my trade-in. Does that sound fare?? or is it to low?? my dealer said he would see what he could do and get back to me.
i then got a phone call from one of his friends saying they would give me 500 for my trade in and 5% of the new car. I found this man rude and patronising and full of b/s, but i was polite to him. He kept saying that no dealer would give me a better deal as it wasn't possible and he wasn't making anything from me. so i said i would think about it and get back to him. am i asking for to much???
cheers
kathy
You are about to spend the second largest amount of money that you ever will and the dealers treat it as nothing - There attitude is well do you want it or not?! I've ben there Kathy, you've just gotta walk away! I did, went to another dealer, who was the nicest dealer i've every met (Big up to Paul who used to work at Westlands!) worried about being on 21 at the time, Paul treated me with respect and honesty, I was allowed to take a long test drive unsupervised, he wasn't pushy and was willing to negotiate with me to a deal that I was more than happy with. In the end they had the deal and my money! Where as Worcester where I went before consisted of a 5 minute drive and then back to his desk to sign the papers before discussing a deal... I wasnt having any of that, and he was so rude. Having bought my '2 saw the dealer from worcester in the supermarket after and had much delight in telling him I bought the '2 from elsewhere!! s:D :D s:D
Anyway, bit of track, my advise Kath, is move to the next dealer! Simple as that, you are about to spend almost 17k with them, if they dont treat you with respect -- walk... Plenty of dealers!! I think you're work to the right budget, I paid 16,800 for mine (b/leather, met.paint) but that was a while back. 16,500 is fair. As for your current car, it might be worth looking at selling private! The dealers are going to want to sell your car for more than they part/ex it for and im not really clued up on mk I prices.
Dont know if this helps, but Good Luck!
(I always thought that spending money would be easy, but HECK no, its harder to spend it than earn it nowadays!!!)
shop around.get the best deal you can before you commit yourself.
and if you get a bum rap of the dealers then walk away.
good luck and hope you get the one you want. s:lol:  s:lol:
Try w www.drivethedeal.com (http://www.drivethedeal.com) w for very good prices.

Alrigth Kathy!
I would walk mate. Sounds like they are taking you for a ride. You MAY be asking for a little too much for your Mk1 (will check on Parkers and let you know...........), but for the attitude and to say that they aren't going to give a better deal anywhere else is utter crap.
I would have a trip down to Bury St Edmonds or if not there, the other one we mentioned at work (I can't remember now!). Take what Coldhams Lane have told you with you and bounce them all off each other. If the worst comes to the worst, I would go BACK to Coldhams and tell someone in authority that you want to talk to someone else cos you found the attitude and demeanour of the salesperson you spoke to rude and condescending. Try and SHAME them into a better price. You just never know...........
But try the other dealers first. I know they are far and wide, but its a LOT of money, so make sure you spend wisely!
Glad you liked the test drive. You can have a pop in mine if you like sometime?
See you Tuesday!
hello,
thanks for all your advice... just got a quote for 17250 thats 10% of the list price. The dealer says 10 % is all the've got to play with???
kathy
Now go and see another dealer with your quote and ask him to beat it. And make sure he knows he needs to BEAT it, not just trim a little off the edges. Get your new quote, and repeat process ad infinitum until such time as you get to a decent price, or they are giving you the car for free... s:wink:  s:wink:
you should of course note that doing this on a sunny day is unlikely to help your cause. Torential downpours are your friend...
That's better s:) :) s:)
As mentioned, keep going and beating the price down until you are happy.
Get as much as you can out of them and don't forget the mats, flaps and petrol s:D :D s:D
Hi,
Try ringing
m http://www.motorpoint.co.uk/ (http://www.motorpoint.co.uk/) m
They haven't got any on the site, BUT they will order some if enough people want them, I managed to get about £4k off list or (20 %) when I purchased, the only thing I didn't get was the leather option, but I presume they will probably be able to do that now.
Worth a call, then sell your MK1 privately, put some pic's up on the other MR2 Forums on the net.
at least they will know what it's really worth to someone and best it be going to a good home as apposed to an auction.
you may aslo want to try
m http://www.trade-sales.co.uk/ (http://www.trade-sales.co.uk/) m
Hope this helps
Cheers

cheers.. i'll give them a call. and try the other sites to. i just have to stay positive. s:? :? s:?
Hi Kathy,
I'm sure your car would make soemone a great car, but remember it is a specialist motor and don't be to upset that at 14 years old it is proabably worth more in sentimental terms than cash (Sorry, but it's true).
Therefore, sell to a privater buyer who will appreciate it, beleive me a toyota garage will not have it on the forecourt, it will just be traded unless it's a concourse example (Sorry again, but it would be selling to a limited market).
On the plus side, I am sure there are quite a few enthusists that would be interested if you advertise in the right place, for the right money.
As for getting a deal on a new one, the two sites i mentioned are a good place to start, as well as the other one mrsmr2 mentioned.
Don't worry about warranty issues with TSL or Motorpoint, you will get a full 3 years no arguments.
So good hunting and don't be upset on the price of your old one, when I came to sell my car, which was in really good nick I sold it for it's real price, which bought me my hard top cover, car mats and hard top stand... with a little change. ce la vie.....
Cheers
Darren
A blue SMT with A/C and leather?... That sounds like a fabulous car! s:wink:  s:wink:
That also sounds like a good price. I was happy to £15k for one that was a year old.

Is that true? I know people who are buying Scoobs are warned off places like Motorpoint due to the cars being sourced from Cyprus or Malta. Can't remember who is now in the EU with all these countries joining but I know Subaru would not honour
any warranty on a car from either Cyprus or Malta due to the source of the car not being in the EU.
I assume (possibly wrongly) that like Scoobs, the MR2s may (will?) not come with an alarm so that will need to be factored into the costs as well.
Not sure on what Toyota's standpoint is on Cyprus or Malta sourced cars.
Just wanting to make people aware so they aren't screwed over. If it's not a problem then please point it out as I am only going on information based on another japanese marque.
word of warning if you decide tio use motorpoint or trade sales.
you will get a good deal. (though watch out for teh ridiculous charge of a PDI they will try and inflict on you)
They alos won't want you to take a testdrive even as your about to hand them a cheque. It's apparently not policy. I told them bollocks I have teh cheque in my hand and your not getting it til I've checked the car drives properly. They gave in in teh end.
Biggest advise is if you no what you want, I asume you do (or we can help :-) :-) :-) ) then great.
DON'T expect a pleasant buying experience or any common sense or knowledge from their staff.
personally I found it worth putting up with for teh £5000 saving.
As they say you makes your choice........
PS you also won't get petrol, mats e.t.c out of them. Or teh option to specify accessories at time of purchase.

I know I've been to Motrpoint and looked at cars a few times..and I've always been put off by their 'all our cars are GB spec' statement...this is completely a personal thing. But I have heard exactly the same as you Hanslow about the warranty side, funnily enough on a Subaru. Friend bought an STI and his local garage refused to service it. However another one would. I think ultimately it depends on the Dealer..and I know generally dealers are coming around to parralell imports, so maybe nothing to worry about, but personally spending that sort of money, I would prefer to but a car from the dealer and build a relationship with them from there. I know it s a small thing, but it does make a difference come service time, parts prices. Plus as Mark quite rightly pointed out you can get the car you exactly want..
TBO honest your disadvantaged by the time of year as I'm sure has been pointed out before..I specifically waited until Sept to get mine. I think though TBO you should get into the late £16k territory without a hardtop from a dealer. And then there is only a grand difference between a main dealer and motorpoint/trade sales car. I have nothing against Motorpoint I should add, merely personal opinion! Again as Mark said..you makes your choice..
And just to re-iterate shop around! I rang loads of places until I got a really nice/idiot guy on the phone who quoted me a price..which shouldn't have been sanctioned, but they had to honour it . I think he must have had a bong on his desk as the answer to every question was "yeah we can do that.." Can I have an exhaust as well.. "yeah we can do that" I would also like a roll bar for that price "yeah we can do that" and on...
Point is different dealers have different, deals, margins, allocations, numerically challenged sales people. Hopefully you'll drop lucky!
Hi,
I agree with Marks comments......
I made sure I knew exactly what should come with the car.
As for Sources, these are normally Belgium for the MR2.
Warranty with MR2 - No Problem fully covered under as the Toyota Warranty is Pan European.
The issue with Cyprus and Malta is they are not recognised under the EU agreement, alot of MX5's are sourced from these places and Mazda will only give a 1 year world wide warranty with them.....
But don't worry, you can check the location with Motorpoint first.
The experience is that of a supermarket, no frills, but then again with your extra £4k saved you can afford not be be over frilled (sorry!)
BUt like buying a CD you can buy it from Tesco or HMV, they will both play the same and no one will notice aprart from you as your bank managers thanks you for leaving the extra wedge in the bank.
£500 is a guide for alarm system, it has to be Thatham cat 1 to comply with insurance rating or else you could be on a sticky, they can do this before you pick the car up, I got a sigma which is much louder than standard spec toyota and is a custom fir (ie. uses the toyota keys, which is pretty cool, no extra fobs to worry about).
Which ever you choose you won't regret it.
Cheers
