Title: Tool for hard-top cover plates?
Post by: Anonymous on May 6, 2004, 19:17
not sure what the correct terminology is but here goes... having removed my hard top a while back I figured it was about time I removed the chrome brackets and replace with the cover plates that came with the kit - but I have no star (spline?) shaped tool in the kit? Before I phone Mr T can someone confirm whether it's something that should have come with the kit, or whether it's a crafty way of making me part with more dosh?

ta very much like!

they aren't supposed to be removed.

the blank plates you have are there only because teh hardtop is fitted at port of entry by toyota uk, not in Japan.

Unless of course you've sold the hardtop... Otherwise, leave them on...

Oh, and the star drive you refer to is probably a Torx. Although there are other similar fastener designs that look similar, Torx is the most prevalent though...

If your careful you can use a normal screwdriver (obviously the right size helps). I did when I retro fitted my hardtop.

And to think I didn't remove mine 'cos I was scared of getting any metal tools that close to my paintwork.  s:oops:  s:oops:

It does say in the hard top guide that you can swop them round if you really want to, hence why they give you a bag to keep the bits in.

thanks for the replies fellas.... maybe I'll leave the on then.  But I do think that 2 chrome lumps spoil it a bit when the hard-top's off and the roof's down. But knowing me I'd only lose them and would come unstuck when it comes to refitting the HT!

Id recommend at least removing them once and wax oiling under them and reffitting them, you won't  believe how much of a water and dirt trap they can be  s:( :( s:(

Surely you are meant to replace the stainless stell bits with the painted covers when you take the hard top off...the car looks daft with steel fixing points and much smoother with the painted covers.  I didn't hesitate to take them off as soon as the hard top came off.

assumig you have a dedicated 6 months with and without teh hardtop maybe.

If like me on teh other hand you put teh hardtop back on for security occasionally or when going on holiday it'sa ballache to keep swapping them.

Also have seen how easy it is to cross thread these ones slip up and your car won't be having tehhardtop back on any time soon.

that was my thinking exactly! did you get the tool with the little bag of  bits or did you have to buy it (if so how much?)

Its not a standard part of the kit, its something you would normally have in a screwdriver set of some sort. Can be picked up cheap as chips   s:D :D s:D
