Anybody suddenly smelt burning rubber whilst driving, which then disappears? ( not tyres or condoms guys)This has happened on four occasions, three times this month. It's not a hot engine / hose smell, definitely burning. It's not related to revving the engine hard, last week it happened driving at 30mph in 3rd through a village, smell comes & then goes & it never smells when idling. Checked over the car & can't see anything obvious. No changes have been made to car, it's bog standard. Starting to get worried, I forsee a trip to see MrT.
I have had the same thing but am also unsure of where it is coming from. Because I recently had a twin exhaust fitted I was suspecting something to with this s:? :? s:?
Is this in the cabin? My engine (even after 26k) absolutely stinks after a hard drive, but you can't smell it in the car.

No from the engine area and I'm also sure its not from the tyres unless some fumes from earlier driving got sucked up through the vents or something s:? :? s:?
The smells in the cabin. Suddenly comes & by the time you say "can you smell burning rubber ?" it starts to dissappear. Don't know whether it comes from the front or rear, next time it happens I'm going to stick my nose by the air vents to see if it comes through there.
Does this happen when you come to a stop? It happens in mine, presumably because when your driving the engine is always behind you, you never smell it. When you come to a stop, it finds its way into the cabin.
I tend to get it after i've been particularly hard on the cars clutch.
i used to get it with the 2 and get exactly the same smell in the celica...always when opened up a bit, thought it was the vvti
Always get it when I'm on the move, sods law says it doesn't happen when you're stationary. It's going for a blast down the M4 Sunday, probably with the hood down if the weather keeps up, see what happens then.
Heath, you will get the smell if you just fitted the new dual exhaust. Not only that, you will see water droplets on the outer lip of your muffler. This is because all brand new exhaust comes with moisture in them (I forgot the reason why this is so). The smell from the exhaust is akin to those of an iron if you leave it on (the iron for ironing your clothes you fool!). That is perfectly normal for 'unseasoned' muffler. The smell and water vapour should be gone in 3 weeks time.
The smell I have mentioned is NOT the same as rubber smell. I have been having this rubber smell from the first day I had my 2. I don't think it's burning rubber. I suspected it's the smell of melting rubber of some hose/rubber connection that's in contact with certain metal parts. During high heat, the hot metal will tends to eat away the rubber over time.
I'm currently stripping my car for sound damping+ sound proofing. So this is definitely a good time for me to investigate this weird rubber burning smell. It cannot be smell from the cabin. But if you roll down your window, you can definitely smell the terrible odour.
I will post a writeup on the soundproofing when I'm done with it, and I will update you guys about what I have found out about the burning smell.
are you sure its not the clutch?, when mine was cooking on gas mark 6 on the trackday, it smelt slightly rubbery, but a bit more accrid as well and i still get a similar smell every so often, new clutch next year me thinks s:? :? s:?

I'm not sure if it's the clutch. There's no way to know till I tear the engine up later tomorrow(or the day after). The soundproofing is tougher than I imagine..... s:( :( s:( 2 days on it now....
