Title: Keyed Windscreen Help.
Post by: Anonymous on May 17, 2004, 09:32
Okay here goes the story ...

My mates and I decide to go down to the local park for a kickabout on Sunday.  We all turn up and park up next to each other .. there are 206 GTIs, Clio's and of course the lovely 2!  There are a couple of local yoofs in there riced up Nova 1.4 SR, anyway we play our footie and come back and one of the yoofs has keyed my windscreen!  Has anybody else ever had a keyed windscreen?  It is particularly annoying I have to say!

Is there anyway that I can get this repaired?  I know a friend of mine had a nasty stone chip and got something from Halfrauds that covered it and hid it really well?  However, I have no idea what i was called ... also are there any alternatives as I do not particularly want to buy a new screen (how much does one cost?)

What a strange thing to 'key'.  s:? :? s:?  As glass is pretty hard it would make more sense (in a deranged fuckwit kind of way) to key the paintwork. Still, lucky for you (if you can call it that).

Is the damage deep or just surface? Perhaps glass polish would do it? Maybe with a sheepskin-drill-attachment-thingy-ma-bob to buff it up?  s:lol:  s:lol:    s:? :? s:?

mate I know this is a crazy thing to key!  I will post a pic later.  I just cannot imagine what else has happened to it.  A stone surely wouldn't create such a long line (I wouldnt have thought)

It isn't that deep, in that its a scratch.

As said it may buff out, toothpaste (dont laugh) is a good mild abrasive for polishing scratches out of glass.  If not, if you should accidently give it a tap, pay your £50 excess and get a new one through the insurance  s;-) ;-) s;-)

If it's in the field of vision for the MOT test, the insurance will probably cover it anyway - it may even be repairable, which will cost you nowt.

A gallon of four star and a pack of swan-vestas will fix it... (the Nova that is)

Otherwise, I'd just claim for new glass on the insurance.

From memory (which is disappearing by the day!) people used to recommend Jewellers Rouge (although I have no idea where to get it!).

Failing that, as mentioned, do it through the insurance for your windscreen as you are more likely covered on it than not, and will only cost 50 quid or so.

Many many years ago i use to help my brother farther fit windows and Rouge is the stuff to use, a windscreen company should be able to buff it out no problems, i've seen some really deep scrathes polished out of shop windows and patio doors.

Cheers for all of the info guys.  I went down to Autoglass at lunchtime and he recommended just getting a new screen for the sake of £50 excess.  I will post a few pics later so you can see what the local yoofs did    s:evil:  s:evil:    s:evil:  s:evil:
