Title: Squeaky-Juddery Noise
Post by: Darth Paul on May 20, 2004, 10:17
Ok, now the car's done 1200k the noises have begun...  s:roll:  s:roll:

I have a sound as per the subject title that seems to be coming from the front of the car. It only occurs when travelling over rough ground. And it's not Bev – she refuses to get in under the bonnet. I thought it might have been the steering wheel lock in the front bin, but I removed that this morning and the sound is still there.

Any suggestions? Anyone else had this? My old car didn't make this noise. I'm wondering if it's the suspension.  s:?: :?: s:?:

Cheers

Hope you have the happy ending that I got!   s:lol:  s:lol:

As opposed to the spare wheel, it couldn't be the plastic trim that houses the wheel, plastic does have a tendancy to rub & squeak (if you know what I mean   s:shock:  s:shock:  ) against bodywork? How loud is the noise?

I have the same noise (and had it on my '01 too).  I asked the dealers to check a bunch of stuff it at the 10k service - including this noise - and I'm getting new strut top mounts.

Having said that, on the '01, I think I made the noise stop (briefly) by adjusting the rubber bump stops on the underside of the bonnet.  These have a coarse thread to hold them in place.  It may be that the bonnet is rattling around - though I don' see why it should - and causing the noise.

On balance, I'd ask the dealer to check it out, though it seems very early to have problems with the front suspension.  Maybe you can persuade them to fit lowering springs as 'compensation'  s;-) ;-) s;-)

Good Luck,
Phil

Does it sound like rubber rubbing against metal...?

My rear sway bar rubber mount recently started to make that noise and it went away with some grease. I installed Sportivo last summer and didn't use any extra grease, only tried to get the stock stuff back there, but probably didn't get enough of it. Maybe Toyota is saving on grease on new vehicles  s;) ;) s;)  Worth checking the rubber mounts and other similar parts..

Cheers guys. I'll try your suggestions and if they fail I'll go and see Mr T. It's been while since they've seen me anyway – last Monday – when they fitted the new TTE exhaust.  s:roll:  s:roll:

Darth,

Did you find the source of the noise?

I had the front suspension top mounts replaced last week, and this has cured mine (for now).  Just about 13k on the clock when it was done, and no more squaeky-creaky noises when parking or doing low speed manoeuvres.

Next stop, replacement alloys as mine are beginning to flake ...

(trouble with us spyders owners we don't seem to trust the shops to look into it (or leaving the car there)    s:lol:  s:lol:
