Title: Chucking In The Towel
Post by: Anonymous on May 29, 2004, 09:27
Well folks,

My '2' is currently with Mr T having it's 3rd   s:shock:  s:shock:   new fuel injector, this coming on the back of a cracked exhaust heat shield a fortnight ago     s:( :( s:(

It's out of warranty in a month's time and the whole pre-cat thing has me spooked so I'm afraid to say that it's time for change    s:( :( s:(

I tested an RX8 yesterday afternoon and I must admit it really is the dogs danglies.  Going to spend the weekend trying some of the alternatives with a view to striking a deal (aided by the many negotiation tips you guys have put forward over the months of course  s:!: :!: s:!:  )

Yep, the pre-cats was a big prompt to get me looking as well. Our 2 in now on a forecourt looking for its new owner.

I considered moving on myself, but I've been spoilt by the '2 now as there is simply nothing else that offers the same amount of fun for the money. S2000, RX8, 350Z... All roughly double what the '2 cost me...

So, for the time being at least, It's staying here at GSB towers. If anyone else feels the same way regarding the pre-cats, just rip them out. its very liberating when you dont have to worry about them.

Pre-cats have me spooked too.. such a shame that an otherwise fantastic car has such a potential time-bomb just waiting to destroy your engine!

I've been thinking of changing for almost solely this reason... but as GSB says, there's  nothing in the same price bracket that compares.. other than another 2! And to be honest I just can't face starting from scratch and fixing all the niggles and rattles all over again.   s:roll:  s:roll:

Mabye a visit to my new local Toyota showroom will re-kindle my enthusiasm!   s:wink:  s:wink:

I love the RX8 but owners have told me that they really drink the fuel, even worse than the official 18mpg  s:shock:  s:shock:

I hear that the RX-8, although a very good drive, is suffering quite some teething problems...      s:? :? s:?
There is the aforementioned fuel consumption, but that's a matter of dedication    s8) 8) s8)     Worse however, is the fact that quite a few Renesis engines suffer from (very) regular misfires and TRULY excessive oil consumption (up to 1 litre/1000 km   s:!: :!: s:!:    s:!: :!: s:!:  ).   Starting problems also seem to be very common.
Personally, I would consider all this before putting down a deposit...
However, one could also argue that "that's what warranty 's for" and totally ignore my doubts    s:lol:  s:lol:

Cheers

IMHO, anyone who's about to sell their '2 only cause the engine might blow (or some other reliability issues) should really take some close looks to their future cars boards. There just doesn't seem to be a single troublefree car. I was browsing around a bit when my engine blew, but seems that the '2 is actually one of the most reliable sportscars today. Even with the precat issue, which really is quite rare and obviously easy to prevent from happening.

Just take a look at the grass on the other side before going there. I did and I'm keeping mine  s8) 8) s8)

From what i've read the RX8 has had lots of problems.  I read somewhere that one bloke had took his back because he was told to check the Oil after every fuel stop, because his car was empty every couple of weeks.  I know the Rotary will always use more Oil than a conventional car because of the need to lubricate the apex seals..but sounds to me like a bit of preventative measures by Mazda.

As mentioned the misfire at 6000rpm seems very common, as common as the pre-cat issue we have

I think its an absolutely gorgeous car, one of the best that been released in the past decasde i'd say..I'm just not sure about the longevity of the engine..RX7's needed a rebuild at 45,000.  I'll keep my 2 for a bit and see how they fair.

Like TEM says all cars have problems. And I think you just have to live with that.  The fact we know about the Pre-cats is probably more to do with the Knowledge that there is within ROC and Spyderchat than a all encompassing problem.  And this is coming from someone who's pre-cat has already gone...and mine runs as perfect as ever.

There is life after pre cat!

Having said that, mine was in warranty at the time...not sure how I'll feel when it's out of warranty..

What other cars are you considering ?

If you're worried about the pre-cats, why not remove them then they'll never bother you again.

If you get an RX8, do investigate their inability to do short journeys without engine damage!  I think I read about this in Honest John's Telegraph column, if not it must be on his forum.

Enjoy whichever choice you make!

I looked at the RX8 too, but then settled on the Leon Cupra R. But that only does ~20mpg too, on the around-town journeys I mostly do   s:cry:  s:cry:    s:cry:  s:cry:
