Title: Standard PFL Sony stereo with phone / mp3 player
Post by: cbf on April 3, 2013, 11:00
Is it possible to use the rear aux in with a male-male 3.5mm headphone style cable to play music without modifying the existing unit? Searches on here haven't been conclusive.

Ideally don't want to have to change the current HU for a few months. If the worst comes to the worst, I might have to resort to using one of those "tapes with a cable" for now..

Thanks

Yes, I bought an adaptor to trick the unit into thinking a cd changer was attached, then the RCA input becomes active.
But it was unreliable so I bought an ax 300 sony aux box, it does the same job,you can connect 2 devices, I used phono to 3.5 for my iphone and bought a small samsung bluetooth receiver which also plugs in, the stereo then can play my iphone and also becomes my hands free,

I got the xa300 for 35 quid new off eBay.

Look at this on eBay:

Sony XA-300, AUX SELECTOR

Thanks, Flipside

I had been looking at that but the lack of bluetooth was an issue for me - do you have the name of the Samsung receiver? Next question, are you still using the stock speakers or have you uprated these?

Cheers!

It was a hs3000 but any bluetooth receiver with a line out,

All my speakers are updated and I have also addeda few subs.

Sounds nice

All in all looking on eBay it's going to cost about 60 quid, might aswell get a new Stereo, I didn't as I got the hs3000 free when I bought my iphone, but all works great.

Thanks for the advice. I've had a look at a few, will hold tight for now and see what's available in a couple of months.

Is there any point in putting in new components without increasing the power available from the HU?

Always worth upgrading the stock speakers, obviously would be better with an amp, but best to start with the speakers

Out of curiosity, what speakers did you get and for how much?

I have some mb quart components, I've had them quite a while I think they were around 140 ish when I bought them, that was about 10 years ago, they've moved from car to car.

Nowadays everyone raves about focal,  also hertz seem to be good aswell, my amps are hertz, good bit of kit.

Another area I know nothing of, but what I do know is that the quality is pants, and my antenna won't come up/go down properly so I don't even have FM at the moment.

...not that I have it on much anyway because I love the sound of the engine  s:) :) s:)

I'd happily buy speakers and an amp if I had any clue how to attach it

Fitting the amp is relatively easy, the speakers are a little more tricky depending on how you fit them, it's a just a process of taking your time.  Lots of instructions on here how to change speakers, if your not adding an amp yet then quite straight forward.

Really? Getting an amp as well makes it easier?
Makes you wonder

I'm debating whether to get a new stereo with fascia, or just get a Sony xa-300 as mentioned on here to plug in my phone or something
