Title: Show me your sub box ....
Post by: s12vea on October 16, 2013, 13:05
I'm just looking for ideas for a sub box to go behind seats. I've got 2x 10" subs and a 4 channel amp which I'm planning on making a build of some sort.
Just wanted to see what anyone else had done, pictures and measurements would be great also  s;) ;) s;)

If it was me I would make a panel to replace the bin doors. Then build a box behind to seal the subs. Also make sure there enough air space behind to suit the subs.

That's what I'm thinking of doing.

I will do, cant right now - poor light and im frustrated with the damn thing...  but there is enough air for the sub to work which is great - ive got an alpine type r sub 1000w rms  s:D :D s:D  boooom!

put it this way... I wouldnt make a custom box again - it has been far to much work! there are SO many angles you need to take in. Do yourself a massive massive favour and get a under dash sub. SERIOUSLY.

Just to expand on the above... sorry mods for double post.

In order to get the right size box you need to take the rear bin trays out and fill the gap with your box.

The front panel is at a slant - if you look at your bin doors now they slant - so you have to angle your cuts so then it fits and creates a seal - we measured 20 times and there are still some very worrying gaps.

The floor and back are the easy bits... but you have to make a slanted bit of wood that goes from the bottom up towards the middle of the car - and then a flat vertical piece to reach the roof.

The roof looks like steps it goes out then up then out then up and out again.... to get round all the nobbly bits and softop tray.

Dont even get me started on the side where the drivers side seatbelt is... In order to have enough air you need to maximise all the space in the rear bin - therefore you need a LOT of angles in order to make a seal.

Plus you will need to soundproof the floor of your rear bins - i used underlay. the back has carpet already and the front also needed underlay.

Sealing the box is the hardest - remember its not a square! there are a lot of angles and different bits of wood joined together you have to use enough glue to seal the box AND make it strong enough to hold the sub. For a good enough glue it takes 24 hours to set - so every time you put in the next bit... you normally have to wait a week before its actually sealed due to glueing every day.

The underdash sub i could have installed within 2 hours. I know its not gonna kick as much as a 10" but it does sound very good. The only real way the 10" will compete with the under dash sub is if you have a hard top (which i do).

Never the less i will take some pictures now....

Rich, have you jus maximised the air space by doing this build or have you calculated it?
I know a 12" needs 2 cubic feet. Looks like you have more than that there.

Lol! Yeah ive calculated it. I cant remember the exact result but I know it was the perfect size
