Title: Mr T recommending timing belt change, should I?
Post by: Anonymous on July 26, 2004, 13:34
I got a letter from my local dealer reminding me my '2 was 4 years old and I should change the timing belt.

It just so happens that they were doing some sort of deal with timing belts so if I took the car in, with the letter, I could get the belt changed for about £190 instead of something like £240 (I don't have the letter with me so these prices are rough guessing from memory)

Although 4 years old the car has only done 29,800 miles.

Should I be getting this done asap or can it wait until I hit 40,000 miles? At which time it might be around 5 or 6 years as I don't do many miles a year!

Mike.

now correct me if I'm wrong, but the MR2 Roadster doesn't have a timing belt for them to change.

 s:oops:  s:oops:

well the letter mentioned a belt of some kind.  I'll have a look at it again tonight but the letter definately had something like.

"[something] belt for MR2 1.8 VVTi roadster £190" printed on it.

I wonder if they are just sending that letter to every owner of certain year cars...local Toyota made that mistake some years ago  s:lol:  s:lol:

It doesn't need changing as it is a chain rather than a belt. Coxon in Henley sent me the same thing insisting I needed to have it changed. Muppets.   s:roll:  s:roll:

If the dealer is near you...why don't go there and ask them to find a belt from the '2. In their catalogs that is, keep them off your car!  s:lol:  s:lol:

I have scanned the letter:

I think I'll call them and ask them to explain more about the "belt" that needs changing.
