Title: Brake Problems
Post by: OptimisticRed on December 10, 2013, 11:42
Dear All,

Problem 1
Due to various reasons I haven't used my MR2 as much recently.

Today I started her up for the first time in 5days (no problem engine wise) but the brakes had seized and I had to give the car a good high power rev in order to reverse her off the drive. I am very surprised that even thou it has been cold recently and that it had been 5 days the barkes had seized so quickly! I am assuming that this was the handbrake that had seized??

Is this a common problem? How should I avoid this? Not put the hand brake on during none use?

Problem 2
My brakes have started making a slight scrapping noise when they are first used for their first say 5 braking's....also when they have not been used for 60 minutes eg on  long motorway run.

Their performance is still very good/standard and they look to have plenty of material left on them. What could be the cause? Just overnight rusting of the plates? Should the plates be replaced anyway?

Thanks
David

Problem 1 is possibly partial seizing of the rear caliper (is it both sides or just one?)

Problem 2 is quite likely to just be surface rust.

Our's stays parked up for up to 2 weeks at a time (although it is garaged), and has never had problem 1, although I suspect lots of factors are resulting in the problem you have with your's. Certainly worthy of inspection  s:) :) s:)

I think rusting of discs, mine does the same when I've washed the car and left it standing, a bit of scrapping and then all is ok, so in my opinion quite normal, I do leave my car in gear and do not use the handbrake when possible.
