Title: Random car alarm. Help
Post by: RachelM on December 13, 2013, 21:07
Hello. Looking for for help
I have a 2006 mr2 and this week my car alarm has gone off at random times.hours after parking it just goes off.
I have changed the battery in the key but that hasn't helped.
It doesn't do it every time I lock the car, just 4 times this week.
I noticed this evening a static/buzzing/hum coming from the engine.
Any helpful advice would be great as I can't find anything in the internet
Many thanks Rachel

Is this with the engine running or not?

Engine off. I've parked the car then the alarm has gone off either 20 minutes later or a good 3 hours later.
Thanks

As a temporary solution you can press the lock button twice to deactivate the internal sensors.
Or three times to activate the deadbolts with the internal sensors off as well.

Not sure how to diagnose the problem itself though. Perhaps one of the sensors has had it?

If you are finding it's happening when windy then the sensor is probably set too high.

Behind the seats on the passenger side and underneath the carpet below the rear bin is a little black box with Toyota on it. It has a small rubber bung that needs to be removed and you'll find a little screw to turn the sensor up and down. You want it on just enough as so when the window down and the cars locked that when you reach in the alarm goes off

Stu,

Is it not 3 times to deactivate the sensor and twice just dead locks it?

Thanks for the advice. But I don't get why it's happening now? Last week I did out some new brake bulbs in. Do you think this has any relavance?
I don't believe it would have anything to do with the senors being set too high.ive had the car for years.
If I take it to a garage, how do they diagnose it?

If you Google for TVSS IV you will find various pdf files for installation and settings. I believe the MR2 has model TVSS IV-D fitted however it *may be* similar in operation to TVSS IV-S for which you should find a TVSS IV-S Setting Guide. The setting guide details various sequences of ignition key on-offs and door opening-closings to configure operational options and 'How to verify the latest alarm cause'. If our TVSS IV-D is similar in operation then you could try following the instructions and you then see the indicators flash a number of times to show what caused the alarm to trigger:

Flash count  LATEST ALARM CAUSE
1            Radar Sensor
2            Glass Breakage Sensor
3            Door Switch
4            Boot/Tailgate Switch
5            Bonnet Switch
6            Ignition Switch on
7            Vehicle Battery cut-lock

You may find that flash counts tie up with how many times that the signals flash when you disarm the alarm after is has been triggered. Either way, whether the TVSS IV-D is the same as the TVSS IV-S operation wise, when you disarm the alarm after it has been triggered I think that the indicators should flash a sequence that shows why it triggered.

I hope this helps but I can't verify truth or accuracy without trying it all out myself and I do not have the time today. Perhaps another member can comment?

PS. I doubt that the brake light bulbs have any relevance, many car alarms detect electrical changes after the system has settled but that would mean your brakes lights are operating after you have left the car. Most likely first suspect is the radar (as others have mentioned) but a dirty switch could cause triggering and even the incorrect location of the rubber boots on the switches can cause problems.

PPS. I also thought the sequence was one press to arm, two presses to deadlock and three presses to deadlock + deactivate the radar?
