Post by: pistol pete on January 24, 2014, 18:46

The pre cats were immaculate
And they were still rock solid really took some beating to get them to break up
So at least we know it doesn't burn oil
It's just a little hesitant now....

Well its been a stressful couple of days with kelly tearing her cornea in her eye across her pupil

So been looking after her lots while trying to get the mr2 sorted for the 1st feb..
I have managed to get the brake pads changed and brake fluid changed to 5.1, gave the interior a good clean as it was rather revolting.
Re-fitted the exhaust manifold with new toyota gaskets, new toyota spark plugs and new cat o2 sensor
Fitted the 16's temporarily until the 15's tires come through as don't want to drive round on arrow speeds
Also painted the calipers

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v323/petandkel/MK3%20roadster/DSC_0021.JPG) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/petandkel/media/MK3%20roadster/DSC_0021.JPG.html)
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v323/petandkel/MK3%20roadster/DSC_0014.JPG) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/petandkel/media/MK3%20roadster/DSC_0014.JPG.html)
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v323/petandkel/MK3%20roadster/DSC_0020.JPG) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/petandkel/media/MK3%20roadster/DSC_0020.JPG.html)

It was ready for its first run out
Which unfortunately was take kelly up to see the eye specialist
firstly she is on the mend, lots of pain but getting better

The mk3, well a bit of a disaster, it drove badly   s:( :( s:(  coughing and spluttering no power..
Got home, a quick all to Peter Gidden  :thumleft:
Then got out my new OBD reader.. o2 sensor another one..

Decided it would be best to change both of them, found out SC do standard toyota denso ones for £45
so went in the ST and picked them up

Fitted.. and what a difference,  pulls really well i like it a lot. Can see its going to be a lot of fun on track

It needs the 15's though and defo needs an alignment..

Then this happened..

I was going to go full race car decals.. but seemed wrong as its not, its a cheap bit of fun tackday car, thats all out to be a good laugh.. so we thought this would give everyone a laugh.. also stops it being so yellow and girly

Going to be a lot of fun on track and give the marshals something to giggle at

Well today was first time I really had a chance to play with as now has the new tyre set up

Got on a road I really know well coming home from work
And we'll it's gonna take some getting used to...
The speed is there its good and pulls well in everygear but whereas in the Mk1 you knew what speed you were doing, this I find you have to look down as it's very deceptive as to how much speed you are carrying
The handling is brilliant, I will get bigger arbs and stiffen the suspension but if handle very nice,
But it's the steering I am struggling with its so very light
I'm used to man handling the mk1 round this is so light in comparison I find you just don't get the feedback
But looking forward to brands where I can really get to learn it

Just so soft and light compared to 14years of mk1s

Really like it just got to learn it

Well what a day...
Its been awesome.. definatly a trial by fire.
Got to brands it was chucking it down, done all the normal signing on etc
Rain stopped but very wet out on track..

Went out for sighting lap.. instantly noticed the extra grip i had over the mk1 in the wet coming out of druids..

Then out for first session.. couple of sideways moments but nothing too bad, felt very good, back end was a little loose.
Had a good chat with an instructor when i came in and dropped the rear tyres a few PSI
Back out again, the track was now in greasey stage, but car felt good pulled really well and gripped enough to upset the hyudai coupe race cars that were out testing...

had a couple more sessions before lunch, noticed the camera was dying so didn't record any of the last 2 sessions,
Then luch... THE SUN , it came out!!!
and my, that little mk3 is awesome... handled brilliant over the last few session, just building up confidence with it, building up the pace
Loads of grip to play with

The whole car was faultess, never missed a beat brakes never faded, although they did take some warming up

Last stint i had a great time playing with an elise for a few laps before traffic come in between

I must say brands can get a little "busy" so i am really looking forward to bedford in a couple of weeks as that is not so busy..

will upload the vids tonight, plenty of proper race cars out, we had a 355 race car in garage next to us

couple of pics i took
hopefully pete K will have a couple of it on track in the sighting lap

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v323/petandkel/DSC_0061.JPG) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/petandkel/media/DSC_0061.JPG.html)
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v323/petandkel/DSC_0062.JPG) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/petandkel/media/DSC_0062.JPG.html)

Will definatly be looking at larger ARB's and someform of suspension at some point

Sorry the rattling is something inside the camera which I am sorting before Bedford on the 20th

It's a £50 hd camera from amazon

I am using pagid  brake pads and they were perfect never faded all day

Thanks for the feedback. I've been looking at some cheap cameras recently for track cameras. Going to try one of these MD80 mini cameras.

Pad wide its something I've been agonising over. I've seen EBC greenstuff, yellowstuff and hawk performance. Think I'm going to pick hawk front (they don't do a rear pad) and yellowstuff rear.

But going on your experience, maybe I don't need to spend quite so much!

Looking forward I brands once my car is ready  s:) :) s:)

the cars standard, and i pushed the brakes hard in the dry and had no issues at all
wanted to try these for same reason, want it to be a cheap hobby as possible, to be honest i could ask no more from them and they have been perfect..

Been looking for a camera myself for track days so thanks for the link!

Where / how did you attach it?  Most track day organisers wont allow suction cups  s:( :( s:(

ETA: oh and how are you solving the rattling?  Just adding some padding into the case?
Title: Re: Pistols Roadster... project track
Post by: Anonymous on February 10, 2014, 09:31
I was going to say the same about camera mount.
Title: Re: Pistols Roadster... project track
Post by: pistol pete on February 10, 2014, 10:08
mount is very easy comes with a Handle bar mount and loads of others... but i used that to go round the bar for rear view mirror
that way its not in the way you cant really seat it and its securely mounted.. its out the way enough that i leave the mount there permenatly

As for the rattle my friend has one the same and his does not so its just my camera, i have told the seller about it and he has offered a full refund for me to send back so its not really an issue...

Just ahve to buy a memory card..
it gives a really good picture for the price and mounts easily and easy to use...

only thing it doesn't do is if its set back so you can see inside the car you won't see outside as its brighter, so do have to do it so it see outside... doesn't like dark inside car and bright outside, but its not an issue where its mounted,

Well that's been loads of fun
All now stripped clutch fluid changed and brakes bled again as had slightly spongy feel when at brands
Rattley heat shield removed too

And it definitely feels lighter on its feet well chuffed
Brakes feel great very strong
Clutxh bite still very high( might have to see I'd rogue can fit me in Friday) but it now returns a lot quicker as it should
I did put a stereo in for some comforts for the long journeys but its not too loud in there no sound deadening has gone the 1.5 was miles louder
Overall very chuffed anyone need any interior parts for a mk3??

thanks people
well last few mad bits get done before bedford

1st was clutch, ended up putting it in a local garage to have it changed with this weather i didn't want to get stuck outside in the rain
when changed the clutch plate was fine, but looked to be the original, guy said most likely the pressure plate had got weak

and yep, soo much nice now a good bite and feel to the clutch now, so much happier with it

Also go the seats in.. very please and comfy
passenger one sits higher but not worried and drivers is pretty low, i have managed to use the original seat runners to get these to fit, so still able to use the original seat belts too

Great work Pete, Seats look great, very interested in how you used the original runners, any welding? Do you think the sitting position is higher than before, in quite talk so wouldn't want to sit higher.

Anything else todo before Bedford? Is it the GT track?

Looking good! Random question, but does the car have more or less rattles when it's stripped out to that extent? Part of me thinks there must be almost nothing left to rattle, but if there is anything then you are going to hear it!

Hi buddy

Well I found the seat bases have 4 bolts which I made small plates to me them to the 4 on the seats

The back of the original just unbolts
I'll get some photos next time I take them out
Nothing more to do as I'm sat in a hotel 5 miles from the circuit  s;) ;) s;)

Nice smooth driving! Car didn't give you any problems? How are the brakes holding up?

Did you feel any difference with the weight taken out the interior?
Title: Re: Pistols Roadster... project track
Post by: pistol pete on February 24, 2014, 19:21
Hi.. noticed the weight quite a bit on track, especially as i didn't have my mate in the car this time...

Brakes were prefect as was the car.. it got hammered all day and never showed signs of anything other than wanting more,

running standard suspension and it was fine(yes in the pics a bit of body roll), was still more than enough to upset the bigger cars, and i managed to melt my front and rear tyres

Here is its last run with my mate in the car

I agree about the suspension, I just bought some tein springs for £100 from eBay. You'll be fighting me for he Coilovers if some come up at a good price  s:D :D s:D  lol

Looks like you had good weather, how many other cars were there? I did a trackday at Bedford a little while ago and really enjoyed it, its perfect for the winter as even if the weathers bad there's not much to hit if you do leave the track. For a cheap upgrade I'd really recommend the Tein springs, think I paid £120 from Camskill and they totally transformed the experience on track without compromising ride comfort on the road

To be honest since doing the precat and lambda sensors I've not touched it
Works out combe I done around 100+ miles at full chat
And Blyton I did 132 miles plus whatever I have done at all the others her tracks..
Oil is still clean... All touch wood of course.
After lydden will be getting a service

But even the tyres and brakes are faultless
Tyres have been melted so many times and I brake soooooo late cos it's more fun
The zombie car just loves it where it's so light on its feet.. It was the idea of doing it cheap. I've defo had my money out of it now

no big updates...

Had an awesome run out at castle combe.. car was faultess and loved it (as did i, late breaking into quarry)

on monday went to BHP at lydden
with the new go-pro, no happy with the placement of the camera so need to play with that, and Ben wasn't there to remind me to stick the camera on the topw bar for 2nd run as we discussed..

It was also a free for all, overtake where ya want etc etc, just mayhem, so for both runs i took it easy as people just didn't know how to use their mirrors, especially a puma and mx5, as the golf and GTV found out (see 2nd vid)

I didn't mind but held back from going around some people as although i don't mind loosing the mk3 if it gets hit or something, but if i can avoid it i will..  defo decided to steer clear of the mx5 that had no idea what or where he was going

It may be doing our scotland trip in a few weeks but we will see

tyres lasted well, 6 track days.. off to find some track tyres now.. these have turned blue when cold now

Shame lydden was a mess, it's a fun little track. Where is the 2nd vid, does a golf get hit?

I tried my camera in the same position as yours but I got no usable video as the light coming in the windscreen was so over exposed, maybe because i have a hard top? Also the sound was pretty bad. Maybe I need a go pro!

What tyres are you going to get, R888?
Title: Re: Pistols Roadster... project track
Post by: pistol pete on May 7, 2014, 11:26
haven't decided on tyres yet..
Sprint series guy i know highly recomeneds the nankangs track tyres. his lap times between them and full slicks is .8sec.. so we shall see..
but i have a spare maragoni so may get another of them and wear them out first..

i had that problem with my original camera which evetually died.. no golf didn't get hit.. but could see the mx5 getting close..

One of my work mates is going to lend me his go pro to try this week so I'll see how that goes.

As for tyres, I've read good things about them too, although never tried them. I had r888s on my locoblade which was not really comparable with the roadster.

I've currently got AD08s, not tried in track yet but on the road they feel excellent

i'm not too worried.. as mine is as cheap as possble just for a laugh.. so if track tyres are double the price, and gain me a couple of secs i'm not really too fussed. i am just having fun.. if i crash it i don';t want to worry i have lost loads in suspension tyres etc./..

On the plus side.. oct 27th is my bday. just got email confirmation my wife has booked me to go round silverston GP trackday for the day.. with a garage.. silly expensive.. but its my bday presnet from her.. something to really look forward to

I just found the 2nd video with the mx5 - that guy was a complete tool, what a terrible driver. I think if you come across someone like that again do a couple of slow laps to get some space. Problem with Lydden is it's quite small so you quickly catch up again

after much umming and arring
me and the roadster my be parting ways..
i want to go into the sprint series, but the roadster needs a cage to do that, plus hard top, plus coilovers really.. so the cost is mounting up, where if i get a mk2 or something else toyota hardtop no need for rollcage, at the level i'm at that suits really..

i would love to have done it in thei as love the car, but money just won't add up

its here if anyone is interested in it, or ill be putting all interior back in and stickers off and bunging it up for sale  s:( :( s:(
love the car, ill be continuing track days, but now also picking up sprint series..

Well here to hoping you guys can help me a little here..

I have founnice s reg rev4 mk2 na for 900 no idea when clutch was done and completely bogo standard.. But know them like back of me hand. But never set my world on fire but would do the job

The other option I have been given is a ae101 levin with a 20v 160hp 4age engine already with coilovers new brakes fast road clutch and it weights in same as a mk3 so stays lightweight
But I don't know loads about them.. But looks like fun,  is fwd though but. Could be set up really nice it's 1200

Your opinions would really help ta

I'd personally stick with RWD but I suppose it depends on a) personal preference b) what series you want to enter it into
Title: Re: Pistols Roadster... project track
Post by: parker455 on May 15, 2014, 16:11
Id stick RWD too. The one you mentioned above sounds decent though at that price with the bits in it. How tuneable are those engines?
I'm a sucker for the mk2 though, that's just me. My mk2 turbo was £1200 with a bunch of bits on it too.

Title: Re: Pistols Roadster... project track

Why not run the roadster in the most basic class for a while and upgrade it when you can afford it?
Title: Re: Pistols Roadster... project track
Post by: pistol pete on May 16, 2014, 22:06
Didn't matter on class the roadster had to have a msa compliant Rollcage.. Due to softtop and nope hardtop wouldn't cut it either as it's no stronger as made from fibreglass

I have its replacement now and cost me less than. Roll cage and still got the mk3 to sell On  s;) ;) s;)
Title: Re: Pistols Roadster... project track
Post by: pistol pete on May 17, 2014, 08:21
Well Its time to part ways with the roadster
  s:( :( s:(
Very sad i have got very attached to the car, and handles and drives brilliant also nothing wrong with it..
I want to move onto the Toyota Sprint Series, unfortunatly the roadster is the only car that HAS to run a roll cage

So that would be minimum of 600+vat+fitting for roll cage (so well over a grand) for a decent MSA regulated one so i could move onto racing if i wanted to, Plus a hard top £400+ Plus Fitting kit, Then coilovers £700.
It was just starting to add up.

So with not having loads of money at the mo decided to change to a car with a hardtop, that way i could start off running it in street class and evolve from there as money allows

First  of was looking at a 20v levin which would have been awesome, but if i needed a body panel or anything a bit different, same again it becomes expensive.

Remember this whole project is about doing it cheap but still having fun..

So after a chat with Mr gidden.. Off i hunted for a mk2 mr2.
I wanted a non-Tbar, Preferable a rev3 plus, NA engine
and wanted it under a grand with Tax and test..
A fair amount to ask but was sure i must be able to find a good rev 3..

And i tell you what.. its actually hard to find a good one out there..
Some very strange machines and modifications. but i wanted as close to stock as possible

Came across a black rev4 which ticked the boxes and a rev 3 but one was to far away and would have took me over budget (set myself the grand including pick up costs and wanted to stick to it) the other turned out to be a T-Bar.. no good

Then i came across a little gem amoungst the rough

Rev 5 In Sonic Shadow. my second fav colour scheme on a mk2 (after cosmos blue)
on autotrader, well in budget
spoke to the guy, really nice genuine chap, just bought a PZ RX8 as an upgrade and the mr2 had been sat at his grandads house for 3 weeks since
Mot'd Till oct, Tax'd till sept
Standard car, said was selling cheap because of rusty rear arches and ABS fault light.

So £30 train ticket and off i went yesterday to cambridge.. That place is just full of bikes and students
Morgan picked me up in his RX, lovely car and off we went

It was the first time he had seen the mr in a week and his grandad was charging the battery, so the car was stone cold not started in 3 weeks

Oil coolant all perfect, no leaks, no rust on the sills at all and never been welded
toyos on the front and contisports on the rear so good tyres
Love the red dials on the rev 5

started up straight away now hesitation, sounded good
the rear arches.. well errmm you'll be hard pushed to see where there is any rust, a pin prick bubble, thats it

took it for a drive, and very solid, one of the most stable mk2's i have been in (i always complain they are a bit twitchty and unstable compared to my planted mk3) but this one felt good

So the deal was done how much as i here you ask.. £860!!!

Then the fun starts, Cambridge to south kent friday afternoon leaving at 5 i knew this journey would test the car. espcially hitting dartford crossing..
But it was all clear drove pretty much straight through, front caliper is holding on very very slightly so will free that off this week.
Popped in and saw pete Kyte on way home, just couldn't believe how clean it was

Got to ashford and gave it a blat down the back roads i know.. It feels good, definatly not as nimble as my mk3 but most definatly more grunty from the engine, the back end is a bit more snappy the the feel of the mk3, all new things to learn.
Fuel economy was just superb, put my focus to shame, Filled up at cmbridge, hardly moved by the time i got to ashford, use a bit through back roads though

Overall i really like it, very chuffed with it and for what i want it for i feel its to good for but never mind  s:) :) s:)
My main aim is to get it handling perfectly and how i want it

Will keep you updated
Ill stop rambling now here are some pics  s:) :) s:)
Its in desperate need of a clean and looks a lot better in flesh

not been on here thought i would let you know how i'm doing

STarted the toyota Sprint Series at woodbridge on sunday
what a good day.. loved every second of it

started off with practice runs..
well let say, new car, new tyres and new track.. it tried to spin out, somehow caught it

Will get a vid up later..
really enjoyed the track itself, changing surfaces levels of grip being an airfiled..
Layout of the track was brilliant

after my first timed run of 2.39. i wanted to improve
gradually i did
QuotePeter Mason
2:39.52
2:37.79
2:36.92
2:35.56
2:34.59
2:33.18
2:33.13
2:33.28

because i was only car in my class i set my self a goal..after first timed run there was a guy called Guy in D-Pro fully stripped with R88s etc who set a time of 2.33.9 so i wanted to beat that as he was running 2.33/2.34 consistant
When i got to that point i was very chuffed i had achieved what i set out to do.
Happy with the car so i have seen some track time, but i do want to do suspension work, the original shocks are showing their age
And won a trophy so happy dayz

I've not read your thread before Pete; looks like you're having loads of fun!

In the photos above, what is the yellow single seater? I have no knowledge of cars of that era, but there is something about them that appeals to me very strongly... also the GT86 looks awesome, much better than stock with some agressive offset wheels  s:) :) s:)

...and of course your Zombie Breakout Response Team mk2 looks like a hoot! I'm not a fan of 3 spokes, but in the picture where there is a bit of a motion blur making the spokes look chunkier I actually really like how they look!

Thing are moving on..

cage is in and welded in .. Happy days very chuffed.. coded welder from work came down and done the welding for me.
after it had cooled put on some seam sealer let that dry then refitted the cage

Also big news... ALL of the exhaust manifold bolts came undone... big shocker.. wasnt expecting that!!
so will be getting on with that and the gearbox this weekend..
awaiting patrick to get back to me about what clutch options he has.. Hurley have also been helpfull with clutch selection.. we shall see what i order this week..

wifey ordered a steering boss for the Paj (she didn't like the huge wheel).. so now has a new wheel in that
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v323/petandkel/Sonic%20Shadow%20MK2/WP_20150708_14_40_00_Pro.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/petandkel/media/Sonic%20Shadow%20MK2/WP_20150708_14_40_00_Pro.jpg.html)

Also test fitted one of the mirrors.. could not believe how much the olds ones weighed
looks good will just make a small plate up to cover the other holes left (functional not for looks)
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v323/petandkel/Sonic%20Shadow%20MK2/WP_20150708_21_01_01_Pro.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/petandkel/media/Sonic%20Shadow%20MK2/WP_20150708_21_01_01_Pro.jpg.html)

Also order something for the front off of here..

jobs for this weekend.. torque up the cage.. refit the seat, wheel and extinguisher

Get exhaust off and start dropping gearbox ready for new TRD LSD box..

got some nice lightweight lights arrive today so can get rid of the heavy pop up lights..
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v323/petandkel/Sonic%20Shadow%20MK2/IMG-20150715-WA0008.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/petandkel/media/Sonic%20Shadow%20MK2/IMG-20150715-WA0008.jpg.html)

i am sure they are rubbish road lights but my car never sees the road or the dark

so will get them fitted, might not do the gearbox dependant on monies for clutch and lightenend flywheel.. we shall see..

Pete do you wear a race suit in your class? Is there anything you recommend to do before joining pro c ?

Will you be at Cadwell for the last event this year?
