Hi All, My recently purchased 2001 MR2 has only come with one master key fob, the valet key is missing. I do have the Toyota key code in the owners booklet.
My question is, if I source a spare key (valet type) and get it cut at a local key cutting shop, will it need a chip? or to be programmed?
I've done a bit of digging but I can only see info regarding facelift cars requiring a chip, not the pre facelift.
So, I'm hoping I can get a blank key "suggestions welcome of correct type s:) :) s:) " get it cut - Job done.
Any advice appreciated! s:? :? s:?
Also, I'm assuming the valet type key operates the car but just doesn't have buttons to operate the central locking. I only want it for emergencies or for my other half to use occasionally if my key isn't with the car.
You still need a key with a chip otherwise you won't be able to de-activate the immobiliser and alarm. (Pre and post FL).
A valet key still has the chip but on most cars won't open the glove box or boot (bins). IIRC that is what the lock to the right hand of the drivers seat does.
Mr T will supply and program a second key but it isn't cheap. However, there are diy solutions and a massive amount of posts on here about it. I'm sure someone can provide a link.
My local key place will do a new key cut and chip for £60 but it won't operate the central locking. Does this mean it won't set the alarm either?(not that mine is working at the mo).
