Title: My garage
Post by: markiii on August 4, 2004, 21:59
Well as someof you know my house has the builders in at the mo, and while here I have had them install and inspection pit and an rsj to mount an engine lift from.

so in light of this thread  m http://spyderchat.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=14272 (http://spyderchat.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=14272) m

I'm in a similar position, brand new floor needing finishing off.

anybody have any experience of this kind of thing? any good or bad ideas?

pics will be coming soon.

self levelling flooring compound is great for getting a nice smooth finish, followed by any of the garage floor paints, I used focus own brand 2.5 years agao and its still nice and smooth (apart from my mess ie f/glass resin etc)

Make sure you pick the right weather day to do it on.  Low humidity.

If I remember correctly there are 2 types of floor paint.

1 = A rubberised paint that gives you a smooth finish

2 = A grit paint for better grip

Both should make your floor impervious to water so dont be suprised to see puddles of water if you put a wet car away.

Don't paint the floor slab for a couple of months, give it time to sweat and dry out.
Also to save money, instead of using a grit based floor paint you could use one coat of standard floor paint, blined it with sharp sand,(spread sand lightly over whole area) then apply a top coat of floor paint. this will give a good none slip finnish.

I used the self leveling floor stuff from B&Q for mine.  Although I only needed it to seal the floor before lino went down.  Seemed good stuff though, albiet expensive.

You need to get a paint thats specially formulated for the following things...

Hard as nails. Trolley jacks put a lot of force down through a very small area, and will go straight through inferior paints.

Acid resistant. Batteries can spill acid, and cold starting exhaust condensation is also acidic.

Chemical resistant. Think Oil, Anti-freeze, brake fluid, petrol, solvents...

Smooth. Makes it a damn site easier to clean up spills of the aformentioned nasties.

Very sticky. You dont want lumps of it flying off when you jet wash it clean, and lets face it, you're not going to be using a mop...

How about this?

Well i'm in the same boat as my double garage is near completion. I had looked at getting this  m http://www.screwfix.com/app/sfd/cat/pro ... 1&ts=28808 (http://www.screwfix.com/app/sfd/cat/pro.jsp?id=10801&ts=28808) m

It's cheap and sounds like it gives a tough finish and there's enough to give the floor a new coat every few years too.

When you do decide keep us updated please on what you get and your impressions. Thanks.

MachineMart have a load Mark - http://www.machinemart.co.uk/product.asp?p=020112200 like that, for a non-motorised 750kg one, or here http://www.machinemart.co.uk/product.asp?p=020112000 for an 800kg electrically operated hoist..

Not cheap mind, at £120 for the latter - you might be able to find a secondhand one in Exchange & Mart perhaps? (Indeed, a search for 'hoist' throws up a few - the 'Industrial : Material Handling' section looks a good bet)..
