Title: gearbox issues
Post by: owz on March 16, 2014, 17:58
problems with the mr-s again this weekend  s:( :( s:(  just wondering if anyone else has had the same symptoms and what it was??
ok so coming off a sliproad towards the roundabout as we were coming to a stop went to change down to 2nd gear but the stick didnt want to move into to position so ended up coming to a full stop and couldnt select any gear. pushed the car onto the side of the road and knocked the engine off for a bit at which point i could easily select gears with clutch pedal depressed so started it back up and it slotted straight back into first so thought i'd try limp it home. Managed to get into 2nd gear at this point and thought it was all going fine until i tried to go into 3rd gear and it was the same problem again so had to limp home in 2nd gear. My gut instinct is telling me its the box??clutch was replaced 2 years ago along with a second hand box but has been a bit noisy since being fitted always put it down to the release bearing but maybe the issue was with the box all along??

Tricky....
Clutch fluid? Would go slightly spongey if air got in but still operates the clutch a little, possibly enough to make it change some of the time.
Assuming your slave cylinder is working properly when the clutch is pressed it can only be two things clutch kit or box (including linkage)

I would say more clutch due to the fact you can change gear with the engine off.

Ive checked fluid that seems fine hasnt lost any fluid and is still full. Gear linkages seem fine all move smoothly when gearstick is moved. Clutch slave was another thing I thought of last night as there is some noise from the engine bay as the clutch is pressed and released but its just a slight squeeking of a sort??

I find they do squeak when the clutch is pressed but it's the movement of the various parts. Its subtle and stopps when the pedal stops.
As above its either the clutch or box. Rbuckingham had a good point, probably the clutch.
