Title: Slow Windscreen Wipers
Post by: steve133 on April 1, 2014, 12:56
Can anyone advise on a problem I've discovered. I have just put the MR2 back on the road after a winter under covers. I had a battery maintenance charger on throughout so the battery was charged. the car started fine but when I put the wipers on they moved really slowly almost stalling, it did'nt matter what speed I had them on they moved really slow. Has anyone come across this before ?

I've sorted it,turns out the linkage had tightened up. A spray with WD40 on the linkages and we're back up to full speed.   s:D :D s:D

Thread revival time!

My wipers have also become oddly slow. I blasted the linkage joints/bushes pretty thoroughly today and also put light oil down the splined shafts as best I could, but there was no improvement.

I'm now planning to check that full battery voltage is present at the motor and, if so, then strip the motor assembly and regrease the internal gearing, etc. Has anyone had any previous experience in doing this?

I had a similar problem, although not on an MR2.

The cause of mine (on a 13 year old VW) was the housing where the splined shafts, to which the wiper arms attach, protrude, had partially seized in the housing.  A strip down, cleaning of the gunk / hardened grease (or whatever it was) and a regrese sorted it out.

Dont have a 2 at the moment so can't picture the mechanism, but maybe disconnect the motor and see how easily the arms move, then you'll be able to easily identify whether it's the motor or the mech.

Good luck.

Smarty, I had a similar thing on our Audi A6. Ours were seized and we acrually ended up stripping the splines. Had to replace the whole linkage in thr end.

I have not heard of this on a 2 before though.
Sounds like a strip is in order.

And no Patrick, not you this time!  s;-) ;-) s;-)

Yeah, it was a seized spline shaft bush on my Accord tourer tailgate wiper when that stopped working.

I'll report back when better weather allows me to investigate further... Thanks for the replies.
