Hey guys, looking to modify my boot build, looking to take one of the 12" subs out and put the other in the middle with 2 6x9s each side.. Im looking to upgrade my door speakers at the same time.. What size speakers are needed?
16.5's I believe?

I don't want to sound all 'audio snobby' (and technically its off topic) but what is the purpose of the 6x9's?
With the old lot I used to hang out with who did competition builds both for SPL and SQ the 6x9 was looked upon as a bit of a 'jack-of-all but master of none' speaker, hence why they were very popular for quick and dirty upgrades in old Fiesta/Nova parcel shelves, etc...
If you want more rich bass/mid-bass then you could consider matching the 12" with two smaller subs (or mid-bass comps) with a nicely set crossover/EQ to give each size the optimum signal. If it is rear fill you want then you would probably be better off with some 2-ways (and fairly small and mounted high) as it's going to be too close for a large set to mix well (and the higher frequencies will be muffled by the seat).
I thought I'd mention it as if you are buying some front comps at the same time you could look at matching/complimenting the rears.

Are there any adapter kits needed?
I've read that the stock plastic mounts can be used by removing the stock speakers which are glued to them.
The plastic mounts also provide a bit of water protection.
If you want to change the sound of your subs then you can maybe just modify your box, such as port length and/or size, add some bracing, and add filling. As Andy said 6x9's are a good jack of all trades but not as good as some subs with components. Adding some small components or coaxials would be a nicer sounding rear fill solution.
If you've got a ballsy amp then maybe you just need to upgrade your alternator and it's wiring?
fyi mdf speaker mounts provide better SQ than plastic ones.

I see people using 6x9's and they're not too bad - just not as good as an old fashion sub!
