Title: Speaker recommendations
Post by: swampy_donkey on August 19, 2014, 11:53
Hi all,

If any of you audiophiles would like to help me out could you please put together some idea of which speakers (with tweeters) are best for:

a) Sub £50
b) Sub £75
c) Sub £100
d) Sub £125

And if possible what each set delivers for the added £.

I have some roof flashing ready to sound deaden the doors.

Many thanks

Rob

You're probably going to get as many answers as there are users!
I doubt you'll get a consensus.

But in my "Audiophile" opinion, gathered from lots of forum trawling and my various installs:

I've assumed you mean components...

£50 - Probably the toughest category, but the Edge brand available from halfords seem well respected on this forum.
My choice would be JBL CS-6C available for around £50 with in line crossovers. JBL are Harmon Kardon (infinity) and use the "plus one" drivers and (I think) true 4 ohm to the HU meaning they go louder and produce more bass than their competitors.
 m http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B004OXI ... ot_redir=1 (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B004OXI70O?pc_redir=1408131726&robot_redir=1) m

£75 - for this price point you can get quite a few more of the "proper" brands such as lower end Alpine, infinity, etc and you should be able to pick up the well reviewed Pioneer TS-A1604C for around that bracket.
Infinity Reference Components would be my choice as I've used them a lot and for the money they just punch like no budget speaker should! They also use silk done tweeters for a smooth top end.
The Alpine Type S comps should be available for around this price as well, which are a safe bet.

£100/125 - I've almalgamated as the prices vary so much anyway..
Got to be looking at something by JL who deserve their reputation, or the Focal Access line (165a)  m http://www.focal.com/en/car-audio/91-16 ... 50604.html (http://www.focal.com/en/car-audio/91-165-a1-3544055750604.html) m  which are brilliant (clear and punchy)
But in both cases a good £100+ set of comps really needs to be amped or have a very good HU, otherwise the benefits diminish.
I almost forgot the Alpine Type R comps, which are well respected.

Of course people also rate brands such as Hertz, Rainbow, genesis, etc but I've not heard these myself.

----

As for what each upgrade brings, that's really hard to say!
The main thing is you are paying for higher quality components and better build. One big thing you get is the oversized off-board crossover box which IMHO is somewhat for show, the cheap speakers still have crossovers they just aren't in shiny boxes (ok they are also simplified versions, but it's debatable what you could hear in the '2!). In fact unless you've upgraded the HU, added an amp and massively sound-proofed your doors, it's debatable if anyone needs to spend more than £50 on their door speakers. Most people would be better off investing in a sub, as most people want more (non rattly) bass and simply buying £150 components and no amp, may not give you this.

Just to add, ignore speaker "power" claims as this is 99.9% irrelevant.

100% agree with the above comments.
Have been avforums member for years and was well into hifi/Home Cinema some people loved one brand while others just hated.
Power ratings all bull. 1 brands 150 watts isn't equal to another brands 75 watts.

Thanks   s:D :D s:D

Ref power, people also get confused, since the speaker isn't the "power" part, the Amp is.
Speaker power is just a suggested "nominal" power and also a maximum safe power. It's only there to help you match your amp's power.
But as you say, since there is no consensus on how to measure power (even using RMS and THD values) it's all meaningless!

I've even heard people try to tell me their amp is 1000watts and their speakers  are 500watts each so they have 2000 watts   s:lol:  s:lol:
Rant over, let's get the man back on topic!
