Title: Replace old new aerial.
Post by: MartinC on August 20, 2014, 21:35
The previous owner of my '2' replaced the aerial with a poorly fitting manual aerial.  Replacement OEM electric aerials seem to be rare, and the ones that are available on eBay don't look like they have got all the fittings with them.  Is there an after market electric aerial that will fit the existing aerial hole, as someone has suggested to me that it is an odd size.

I want to try and stay as standard as possible.

Failing that has anyone got a OEM electric aerial, with the body work fittings they are willing to sell me.    s:D :D s:D

Thanks

I've checked through post on here and other sites and it all seems a bit vague to how to stop the aerial extending if you want to say just use to CD player.

I know someone has suggested disconnecting around the boot bin area which I tried and disconnected all plugs there and yet it still came up?!

Some have done a "Aerial overide mod" what is that exactly and do I need to take it to a car audio specialist?

Thanks.

I am no car audio specialist but managed to do this mod with help from on here.
One wire, positioned under the central dashboard area in close proximity to the radio unit needs cutting and a switch inserting.
Some have used the Passenger Window Switch to the right of the steering wheel (You probably will not miss this function if you use it for the aerial mod.)
Others have put in an after market auxiliary switch, or obtained a previously owned mk3 switch.
My pfl has two blank switch positions, where you have a coin holder, this can be removed and replaced with a switch.
PS:
I find our "Search" function sometimes over helpful.
If you look in this section on Page 1 you will see a thread " Using the passenger window disable switch for something else".
Also have a look at Page 7 " The correct wire to cut for the aerial mod is:"
The wire colour seems to vary.
My pfl was blue.
It really is an easy mod once you have found the correct wire and the exercise getting under the dash will help you with your Limbo dancing!

I managed to get a second hand aerial from Dick Sloan which with a few profanities I managed to fit in an hour or so. I dont know if  sdick dick sdick  is on this forum but he is on the Mr2 roadster forum on FB. He is really good for parts and a nice guy to boot.

D!ck was banned from this forum some years ago now for persistent 'insider' dealing.
