Title: Double DIN CarPlay headunit
Post by: Craikeybaby on December 27, 2014, 14:43
I had a play with one of the new Alpine CarPlay headunits the other week and have decided that I want one for my MR2!

When I first got the car I decided against a double DIN headunit as I thought the position may be too low/blocked by the gearstick. Can anyone with a double DIN headunit confirm if that is the case?

As Siri is the main input I'm going to have to fit a microphone, has anyone fitted one for bluetooth calls, if so can you advice on positioning?

Also, what is needed to fit a double DIN headunit in an '04 facelift MR2? I seem to remember needing to retain the trim piece from the original headunit to fit around the single DIN adaptor. Will I need this again, or something else?

My bluetooth mic is located on top on the steering column and works well unless i am roof down at motorway speed.
It's a cheaper pioneer model so i imagine an expensive alpine unit would be even better.

Thanks!I'm not expecting it to work with the roof down, so no problem there.

+1 for steering column although the caller can hear the indicator switch and headlight flashing quite loud!  s:) :) s:)

For fitting from factory unit you will need the

iso lead...link below
The original surround WITH the side fillers...link below

Iso lead.... m http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PC2-17-4-Toyo ... 2a14956df5 (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PC2-17-4-Toyota-MR2-MR2-Roadster-ISO-Stereo-Head-Unit-Harness-Adaptor-Wiring-/180733963765?pt=UK_Cars_Parts_Vehicles_Terminals_Cabling_ET&hash=item2a14956df5) m

Side fillers....  m http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Toyota-Celica ... 3a79ff1d8a (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Toyota-Celica-MR-2-RAV4-4-Runner-Double-Din-Fascia-Facia-Panel-Stereo-DFP-11-08-/251154865546?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3a79ff1d8a) m

Its a good time to fit an inline switch on the aerial feed wire to save it being up all the time.....i fitted mine  to the iso lead before fitting instead of cutting any original wires.

The unit is fairly low but not too bad, working it isn't a problem for me....my Sony unit came with a small remote which is handy for changing volume+ skipping tracks.

Perfect - thank you! I've already got the ISO lead from my single DIN headunit.

If I can find room under the dash I may also fit a DAB module, then do away with the AMFM altogether, but if I don't thanks for the aerial tip - I wonder if I can control that from the headunit...

Sorry.....should have said you need the original side mounting brackets as well, you might be able to use the supplied cage if you don't have these.

I should have them somewhere, I didn't throw anything out when I fitted the single DIN unit, although I seem to remember it being a PITA to fit...
