Title: Rocket bunny style wide arches.
Post by: Rob988 on March 6, 2015, 22:04
Hey guys,

So i've been trying to find something like this for a long time, with a combination of trying to put something together myself and asking people in the UK it seemed almost impossible to come across.  However after chatting to a fellow enthusiast in Singapore, it appeared he was after the same thing!  He's developed a kit almost exactly to the spec I wanted myself which is great.  Its very much inspired by the gt86 Rocket Bunny kit and the kits coming out from Liberty Walk.  All very Japanese influenced so I note that there will probably be more people that dislike this more than like it, however I thought it worth sharing with you.  Here's some pictures:

It will take some fine tuning as these things do to get the stance/wheel position/height right but I think it has a lot of potential. I imagine ideally like a lot of wide body kits you'd want to run 18's, however thats not my plan as of yet, happy with the 17's I have so will see if I can get it looking good.  Excited by the potential rubber I'll be able to use. Would be interested to hear peoples views on it.  I'll be getting the kit on my car asap

looking at doing a similar idea as well with the over arches your selling. I want to make a trial kit with 2" wider arches front and rear. however im going to make it a full fibreglass wing replacement, and if im lucky it will be in orange carbon effect so I don't have to paint it lol

Yea for sure (you're welcome to those by the way!).  These will require a fair bit of cutting, pretty much removing the arch that is there and replacing it.  It could be blended and recast as a one piece.  I kinda like the riveted look though.  Its nice to have an option here thats considerably cheaper than most wide kits out there.  This is coming in at £399.

I know what you mean but I plan to do it myself so should save a fair bit more. looking at the kit there wont you need the same front bumper, side skirts etc as the kit has been made to fit those ones.

Oh for sure, much more rewarding making it yourself aswell.  Props to you, I chickened out when I got the angle grinder out.

Yea it would need a similar set up, however rear bumper and sideskirts wouldn't be an issue due to how they sit. I Imagine you'd want a similar front bumper.  I've got a picture of it offered up to the Top Secret bumper and it fits to that well too.  Any others I guess would need a fair amount of work.

yep that's why im looking at making a cast, so literally taking body filler etc to my car to make the shape and then making a mould of it.

this is what I would like to make a similar version of

Just the arch extensions.

I worry about the massive rear arches and how they'll handle high speed road debris.
If it's fibreglass, I think rock 'chips' may not accurately describe the damage which may/will occur. I guess you could always stick a black rock chip shield on the the arches a la porsche and lotus.

Personally, not a fan of TRA Kyoto's work, or Rauh Welt Begriff. I just don't understand 'why'.

See i'm the opposite.  An RWB 964 would be my dream car.  I enjoy that its more of an extension of the existing car, opposed to a lot of wide body kits trying to make the car look like something its not.  Of course, only my opinion, I admire any effort gone in to making a vehicle unique(ish).

As for 'why' this is the best I can offer:

Although it doesn't really answer that question at all...

Yeah I've been quite immersed in the 'JDM scene' for a while now, having subscribed to speedhunters, Maiham media, slammed society, stance nation etc for some years so I've pretty much seen it all (not first hand of course).
On one hand you get astonishingly well executed one-off builds like the RE-AMEMIYA rotary powered europa, BENSOPRA 380sx and pretty much anything from the Gatebill paddock.
On the other hand you get the stickered up, fart-canned, ziptied, welded diff'd, BGW'd, chimney exhaust, cambered,  lazy 'scene-inspired' cars which look really stupid to me. They're just one snowplough splitter away from the Boso crowd.
The third category could be described as nostalgic car (think star road S30 or rocky auto hakosuka) where preservation/restoration is prided over extreme modding.

What the TRA kyoto/RWB and LB are however is none of the above. They essentially just hack apart factory panels and bolt on over fenders which is neither improving the car or making it unique - it's too common to be unique. They're just altering the body so they can fit fat wheels and to be able to spray 'idlers' on the side wall in a font size even the blind can see. I neither like or dislike their work. I am just too perplexed by this particular fad / trend to 'get' it.
Everytime I see a car modded in that 'JDM YO' style on the road, honest to God, I close my eyes and groan. I guess I really have just seen it all.

Don't even get me started on dubbers... good God.  s:roll:  s:roll:

...also the wakaba leaf and 'no fat chicks, car will scrape' decals make my eyes twitch.

EDIT: On topic - I think the bunny inspired wide arch kit looks quite well made though I really don't know how well it would survive on a street car. On a garage queen or hard parker maybe.

Yea now you mention it, I kinda agree.  The first time you see something come out from these guys its a bit shock and awe, the first LB 430 I loved.  However since they started bolting over fenders to BMWs etc, it just seems a bit over used.  Also, i'd rather eat my eyes than cover my car in stickers.

I feel slightly different to RWB as I admire how each car is a one off.  Although not everything that comes out of Akira Nakai's garage is all that different.  This however I could look at all day:

(http://s30.postimg.org/r8xucv9cx/RWB_exhaust.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/gyvfdmjh9/full/)

Although I understand the complete uselessness of this outside of the perfect roads of sunny California..

I think for the money i'll take a punt on the kit and see how it comes out.  If anything I can be glad of the fact that it will most likely remain as a one off in the Uk for a while, unlike the large amount of replica Rocket Bunny 86's.

Just go for it Rob. I've always had a soft spot for your JDM style roadster so it will be really interesting to see what you come up with next using the replica kit.
If it turns out ok I may even be willing to turn a blind eye to a bit of '#featurethis' stickerage.  s;) ;) s;)  if you can avoid eating your own eyes long enough.

You're right about the colour.

I like the look on the arches...it makes it look even more Porsche like but I don't like the screws showing.
