Title: Quick question on 17" tyre sizes
Post by: LeeUK on October 14, 2004, 18:39
Am looking for some 17" rims and have come across some 17x7 wheels.  Is it safe to fit 205's on the front and 215 on the rear?  I hope this won't upset the handling to much.

These wheels don't come in 17x8 size unfortunately   s:( :( s:(

My wheelie good choice of wheel:        s:D :D s:D

can you? yes.

would I? no.

better would be 225/35 on the rear I wouldn't go from a 30mm stagger to a 10mm. plus it keeps your rolling radius down.

the most important thing you must consider though is offset of teh wheel.

Nice choice of wheels there matey   :-) :-) :-)

Post by: LeeUK on October 14, 2004, 18:52
Thanks Mark, will that size tyre fit on a 17x7?  I'm not to good with tyre sizes etc so you'll have to excuse my ignorance!

You choice would be:

17x7 with 205/35 front

17x7 with 225/35 rear

What offset?
Title:
Post by: markiii on October 14, 2004, 18:59
wheels are fine, if you have the correct offset.

go for 205/40/17 up front and 235/35/17 at the rear.

I wouldn't advise going bigger than 225 with any profile on a 7"rim

on a side note budget for good tyres, some people have a tendancy to cut corners once they see how expensice tyres in those sizes can be. But it's not worth it in the long run.

Cheers Perry, they should go well with the bodykit I have planned   s:D :D s:D

Post by: LeeUK on October 14, 2004, 19:05
Ok thats great, thanks.

I'm hoping to fit some Toyo's.  I'll assume the wheel shop (Xtreme) in Harlow will fit the correct offset.

With a bit of luck they'll fit the wheel and tyre package and lower my car on eibachs for under a grand!   s:) :) s:)

Post by: LeeUK on October 14, 2004, 19:12
Ok just had a look in Demon tweeks,  I don't think anyone makes a 225/35/17.   s:cry:  s:cry:

What have other people done in the past?   s:? :? s:?
Title:
Post by: Anonymous on October 14, 2004, 19:20
goodyear and falken are the only 2 makes that i know off that make 225/35's in 17".
i have the falkens on mine but they are around £80 a tyre and the goodyears are around £120.
best to shop around.
Title:
Post by: markiii on October 14, 2004, 19:20
F1 GSD2 come in that size, I beleive, Falkens do, and so do S03

ref offset, don't assume, theres what will fit, and theres what is a good idea. not all wheels come in suitable offset.

you want 45mm in an ideal world, I've used 42mm, and 40mm would probably be ok.

38mm is tegh most common and I wouldn't use them myself.

also have you checked that they come in a suitable PCD?
Title:
Post by: LeeUK on October 14, 2004, 19:29
yep PCD 100   s:D :D s:D
Title:
Post by: LeeUK on October 14, 2004, 19:42
With a 45 off-set they won't stick out like slacey's old wheels will they?   s:? :? s:?   Can't remember what he had but they looked a wee bit odd!   s:lol:  s:lol:
Title:
Post by: markiii on October 14, 2004, 19:52
yep thats my point, Seans were 38mm IRC, they also rubbed and would not have worked witjh lowering springs.

PCD 100, but is it 4x100?

and are they hubcentric?
Title:
Post by: Anonymous on October 14, 2004, 20:14
IIRC they are 45mm offset
Title:
Post by: LeeUK on October 14, 2004, 22:49
Yes they are 4x100, what is hubcentric?
Title:
Post by: markiii on October 14, 2004, 23:55
it means that the wheel is aligned to be central on teh hub by the bit in teh middle of the bolts hub-centric.

the other alternative is lug-centric where it's actually the wheel bolts that are responsible for aligning the wheel.

you can't mix teh 2, at least not without teh appropriate rings.
Title:
Post by: LeeUK on October 15, 2004, 09:17
Ah ha!  Hubcentric, but I will check.  Blimey you know your wheelie intelligent knowing all this stuff.....  s:oops:  s:oops:

I have 16 inch wheels 16x6.5 with 195/45/16 all the way around!  Not sure of offset, just bought spacers to fit MR2 and they went on like a glove! never had any problems with handling (in the last year) but thinking of having 205/45/16 at the back when it is time to change.

What you reckon??

saying that, i thought the alignment was out as the car sometimes drifts, had it checked and everything is spot on  s:roll:  s:roll:  !!

also have a few pics but not sure how to post them!
Title:
Post by: LeeUK on October 15, 2004, 17:06
To post pics you need a "host", basically go to http://www.spydermagazine.com

Click file library and upload the picture files.

Then make a note of the url to view the pictures which to help you out is:

 m http://www.SpyderMagazine.com/files/you ... e_here.xxx (http://www.spydermagazine.com/files/your_file_name_here.xxx) m

Obviously put your file name in the right spot as detailed and where it says "xxx" you need to add the file type eg. jpg, gif or bmp.

Then when you come to post all you do it click on the //button%20then%20type%20your%20spydermagazine%20path%20with%20the%20filename%20and%20type%20as%20shown%20above%20and%20then%20click%20on%20the button to close the path.

Before you submit the post click the preview button just to check the picture comes out!

Simple   s:lol:  s:lol:

Hope this helps

Ok I went to Xtreme and R-tec today wheel hunting with my mate Andy and found out that the wheel I originally chose doesn't quite go that well!

Here's a few pics of the wheels I've looked at today, some of the pics show 18's, please do not be alarmed!  I'm getting 17's, it's just that they had some styles in 18's only, at the time I visited to show me!

My original choice
(http://www.spydermagazine.com/files/wheelDSC00608.jpg)

My second choice which I still like somewhat:

I really like these:

MY FINAL CHOICE...I'm going to get them in silver finish to keep the car looking clean:

They have quoted me £701 for the wheel and tyre package, I'll get the bugger lowered at the same time just to stop everyone laughing at my SUV MR2!   s:P :P s:P

What's everyones views on my choice/taste of wheel?  oh, the wheels are reasonably light.   s:wink:  s:wink:

i like the same ones as you, the 4th picture.
i think they go well with the red car.

Post by: markiii on October 17, 2004, 00:57
what are the weights?

ref black wheels, I suggest you actually see them on teh car.

I mocked soem up and liked it, in the real world I don;'t like so am going back to silver.

ref the last lot are you sure they do your offset? they look to deep dished to me.
Title:
Post by: LeeUK on October 17, 2004, 11:12
The last wheels are exactly the same as the silver grey wheels.  They come in a 42 offset.  They're not deep dish, just slightly set back like my original choice (about 15mm).  I think the silver and grey on a red car makes too many colours, on a silver car they'd look great.  Therefore the all silver wheels are going on mine

Really? I thought they looked awesome at JAE! esp on yellow!

Lee:  Personally out of those wheels you've put up I'd go with the first ones, they look much better quailty than the others, though they are probably pretty heavy.

Also I think the last style of wheel would actually look much better in black personally, I think the 2 is too small a car to have lots of silver in its arches, but maybe thats because the ones in the pic are 18". Plus black still looks good when they're caked in brake dust. Just my two cents
Title:
Post by: LeeUK on October 20, 2004, 16:25
The 2nd from last picture looks really good in that size but it is an 18", I think if it were smaller (17") it may look too small, being 2 tone 'n' all.   s:roll:  s:roll:

I know the above comment maybe a bit ricey but I believe it to be true and I am contemplating 18"s if i got for the Gunmetal   s:oops:  s:oops:

Ditto. Mark they looked very good on yellow but I'm wondering myself whether black wheels would look too much on a black car.  FWIW I like the set in the 3rd picture.

Not much of a photoshop!   s:D :D s:D    More of a mess but anyway:

What do you think.  After everyones comments I'm swaying for the gunmetal I really am undecided now, like a kid in a sweetshop!

Ordering them tomorrow, 17's or 18's?  The Picture shows 18's.

17's £701

18's £1080!!!

I want 17's for the fact that they are £400 cheaper but worried if I get them in gunmetal they may look too small.  Silver will look beter spinning.   s:? :? s:?    I'm not a good decision maker as you can all see!!!  I may have to ask my Girlfriend!   s:oops:  s:oops:

Post by: LeeUK on October 22, 2004, 16:35
Looks like I may have them first!!!   s:P :P s:P

£105 per wheel (£420 total)

Set of Toyos £300 approx

So I'll see if Xtreme will take £750 for them fitted and I want some of those alloy valves thrown in too!  They quoted me £799 earlier for the package but they're pricey anyway, there is no way I'm gonna pay over the odds!   s:wink:  s:wink:

I'm going down to Xtreme tomorrow (Sat lunchtime) to have a look at the heliums up against my car. Markiii, your welcome to come along if you like to have a look at them.

I had the TTE springs fitted today, a nice lower look to the car now.  It cost £308, much cheaper than the Eibach prices I was getting.  Feels even more Go-kart like now, and adds so much more fun to the driving experience!  I can't wait for the TRD brace!

thinkI could struggle tommorow Lee, but I'd liek to pop in in theory.

personally i reckon tehy will look teh dogs, I take it your still looking at them in 17"?

Just a thought but if teh offsets are teh same e.t.c might be worth considering 16" front 17" rear?
Title:
Post by: LeeUK on October 22, 2004, 16:54
Good idea mark, unfortunately they only do them in 17s and 19s!

I'm going for the 19's of course.....  s:lol:  s:lol:  .....no I'll end up burnt to a stake by spyderchatters if I did that, I think the 17's will look really nice with the lowering now, anything more wouldn't look right.

The 19" Heliums are probably lighter than an awful lot of the aftermarket 17"s anyway though  s;) ;) s;)

19" would be slight overkill on a '2 though I feel, unless you want the 'agricultural' look  s;) ;) s;)

Just out of curiosity what is the 'official' weight of the MR2 alloys?  I've seen 14.6(15x6) and 15.0/15.2 (15x6.5) Not even sure why there are different fittments listed, assumed all 15's were the same size? Is this a stupid oversight?

Just interested as I'm looking into some tasty alloys myself.

Front: 205-40-17
Rear: 215-40-17

if memory serves I was running 32 front and 38 rear on teh same size F1 GSD3

it will do as a starting point, but your really in unknown territory and will need to experiment.

I asked a similar question a few weeks ago... This is the answer I got:

Start with the the stock pressure (26 PSI Front and 32 PSI Rear) and gradually adapt it to your own "taste". I'd reccomend a digital tire gauge, so that you can have coherent measurements.

Crikey Mark, your rears must have been practically solid at 38psi  s:) :) s:)

Which reminds me to sort the pressures in mine - at the moment I have 31psi rear, 29psi one side on the front and 24psi on the other (oops), and it's a tad vague with the Toyo's on.

But I digress.

Lol  s:) :) s:)  I bought a car-powered compressor to do that  s;) ;) s;)  Just haven't used it yet - although to be honest, the tyres have only done about 15 miles since they were put on a couple of weeks back, so it's not that bad really  s:) :) s:)

I'll get out there and sort it out tomorrow I think, assuming it doesn't honk down..

F1s have pathetically soft sidewalls, and in theory you should increase pressure 1-2 psi for every inch you oversize, so thats not far off.

was running 45PSI at northweald

They are the Konig Sixspeed Graphite

Click her for more details: http://www.konigwheels.co.uk/

Konig have much nicer wheels than this though, have a look at the driver, e-racer and lockdown.  All very nice wheels.
