Title: Post 2002 headlight bulbs
Post by: Darth Paul on November 1, 2004, 11:53
I've done a search and there is no info regarding this that I can find (I'm sure someone will prove me wrong  s:? :? s:?  ).

I'm thinking of getting replacement bulbs like I had on my old '2 – 50% brighter jobbies – now that I'll be driving in perpetual darkness.  s:evil:  s:evil:   So what specs are the bulbs?

The sidelight?

Dipped beam (projector). Are these replaceable/upgradeable? I'm not going to spend alot of dosh (so no HID) or is it an expensive (Mr T) replacement? Can you get 50% brighter bulbs for these?

And the main beam bulb?

My manual is lost in the study somewhere, so I have no point of reference.  s:oops:  s:oops:

Cheers folks!  s:D :D s:D

The answer is yes. They are just standard tungsten filament lamps, so theres nothing unusual in there. I'm going to exactly the same thing myself when I get a chance.

At present though, I have no idea what bulbs are fitted...

So presumably it's a standard bulb behind the big glass marble?  s:wink:  s:wink:

I think the lo's are H7 and hi's 9005...so yes, they are standard, but the choice of those is nothing compared to H4's  s:? :? s:?

Duh! Manual was buried in the glovebox!  s:oops:  s:oops:

Sidelight – 5W wedge base bulb – I got (road legal) blue tinted.

Dipped beam – 55W H7 Halogen – I got Philips Vision Plus. I had these on the old '2 and they were excellent.

Main beam – 60W HB3 Halogen. I've not got these yet (the above cost £34!  s:shock:  s:shock:  ), but they are hard to find. I will probably get them from  w www.speeding.co.uk (http://www.speeding.co.uk) w  as they have them there. Next month.

Well fitting them is a complete b@stard.  s:evil:  s:evil:   Really. Now I've fitted many bulbs but the post-02 have to be the worst. The retaining clip on the dipped beam bulbs is very difficult to unclip/clip. Even harder on the nearside bulb. Next to no room to get your hand in and get a decent grip.

The sidelight bulbs are easier, though the bulb holder only goes into the hole one way, and then twist locks into place. Again, tiny hands are required.  s:? :? s:?   Can't wait to do the full beams...  s:wink:  s:wink:   s:roll:  s:roll:

I gave up on the job before I got the clip off and found I couldn't get it back on again.

Any tips?

Thanks

No, actually.  s:? :? s:?   A torch would be a good idea so you can have a good look before you start. Do one side at a time so you always have a point of reference. As for the clip, I had a 'sweaty' moment when I thought I couldn't get it back on again, and that I'd be driving home with a light out. Once I got it on I was heartened and did the nearside. This one was even more difficult!  s:roll:  s:roll:   So actually yeah, some advice. Do the nearside one first in the knowledge that it gets easier!  s:lol:  s:lol:

Thanks. Still sounds a bit hairy. Do I pay Halfrauds £7.99 and let them take it to MRT when they can't do it?????  s:roll:  s:roll:

Do you really think that a spotty Halfords oik is more qualified to change the bulbs than you? What are the chances that he has worked on a post 02 MR2? DON'T DO IT!!!!  s:D :D s:D   Personally I'd rather be the one to mess it up. At least I'd know I haven't damaged anything.

Be aware when fitting brighter bulbs that they normally generate more heat. I've had both headlights replaced as a consequence of using reflector type headlight adjuster stickers and the perspex bubbling.

Point taken. However, I used these on the old car with no problems, so fingers crossed...  s:) :) s:)
