Title: Front Number Plate Fixings
Post by: w00dhead on June 24, 2015, 11:26
Hi, potentially stupid question so apologies in advance (and I did do a search before hand) - Is the front number plate housing fix by screws to the front bumper or sticky pads? Mine looks to have 3 sticky pads...but I don't want to just force the thing off. Do I need to take it off to fit a new number plate or should it (the number plate) just pop out...? It looks to be very firmly in place?!?!

My pfl has very obvious screw fixings direct to the black grill frame.
The ( heavier!) Facelift has a number place housing ( increasing unladen weight!) and so there is potential for some form of "secret" retaining fixing or double sided tape.
I suggest that the if you can see the complete four edges of the number plate then it is not retained by the housing and is fixed with tape.
If the edges are not visible then it is retained by the housing.
Either way have a feel around at the back of the housing for some fixing device.
If you start now you just might remove it before someone else comes along who knows the solution.

My FL had the number plate screwed into the backplate/holder and the holder has two fat cross head screws.  Now all gone  s:) :) s:)

How have you fixed the plate on after removing the holder?

I positioned the plate carefully, marked new holes and screwed into the bumper.  Nobody will ever see under the plate  s;) ;) s;)

Looks as though your number plate has shrunk in the rain.

Could you use the existing holes (used for the mounting plate) to fit the number plate if it was a "normal" size, sorry to suggest yours is a bit on the small side, no offence!

Yeah sure you can, you just need to use fat screws, as the holder screws has a 10mm bolt head with a philips in it.  I just thought it wouldn't look very good.  If you got the right screws with nice caps, should be fine.

I refitted mine on to the holder last week,i was going to use screws but ended up using mega sticky number plate pads (from ebay).......for removing i was able to pull back the plate and cut the existing pads with a small craft knife......cleaned the old bits of pad off and refitted.

I removed the backing plate completely and have legal size letters on a smaller plate fixed with 3m HD Velcro that covers the fixing holes

I did something similar with mine but on the FL bumper there are 2 2p size holes behind the plate which you have to fill and spray. Before removing it had various holes drilled through the plate and backing panel and the bumper as each previous owner obviously decided it was too difficult to use the same holes!

(Oh I also had no issues with excess heat from reduced airflow)
