Title: Post 03 Headlight Beams
Post by: Darth Paul on November 11, 2004, 15:17
Projector type.

I've always been happy with the illumination of these newer-style lights. However, now that I have changed my bulbs (for 50% brighter jobbies) I noticed that the offside headlight was aimed too high. Either that or the nearside was aimed too low. So I took it to Mr T to have it checked, and sure enough, the offside headlight was indeed aimed too high (since new). So they adjusted it for me. Brilliant, you might say.

Except now my illumination is crap.  s:? :? s:?   Below is what I mean.

Basically, on all the cars I've driven in the past my headlight beams generally touch the car in front, illuminating the lower portion of the back bumper. Now they do not and there is a huge diagonal 'hole' in the beam. It is great for changing lanes to the left or turning left, but not much good at anything else.

My dealer assures me this is correct so I took it to another dealer for a second opinion. They wanted to charge me a half hour's labour so I didn't bother. Now it would seem that I need to go back to the first dealer, but before I do I need to know if anyone else has this problem. Or not. Post '03 remember.

Cheers.

Mine are crap too. They needed to be adjusted up a little. You can do it without removing the underbonnet plastics, just insert a phillips screwdriver and do the same number of turns each side. Dont go mad though, as not only will you dazzle oncoming traffic, but your high beam will only light up birdsnests and passing 747's.

Did you try to change back to the old bulbs? Honestly, some "better" bulbs are pretty crappy  s:? :? s:?

You can adjust them against a wall though. The beam should lower 1cm/1m, so measure 10 meters from a wall and turn your lights on. Then adjust them so that the height on the wall is 10cm lower than the height of the centre of the light.

No idea about which screw though...doesn't it say that in the manual?

It's not the bulb Tem. The reason I had such good illumination before I changed them was due to the offside aim being too high. Once I'd changed, the increased brightness made it more noticeable so I got Mr T to adjust them. The car's there again today, so we shall see.  s:roll:  s:roll:   I just wanted people's experience with the new style lights – whether they have what I've described or if they've got a good full coverage. Then I would have known how to handle the dealer.  s:? :? s:?

Sorry Paul but I've been more than happy with my headlight beam strength and pattern. Wouldn't know what to fiddle with to adjust them  s:( :( s:(

I'm still running the stock bulbs so they are still at whatever alignment they were when I bought the car. I would have thought any MOT place would be able to adjust the beam pattern to match the required settings. Might be worth a look if you have no joy with Mr T.

Thanks! So it's not 'normal' then. If they don't sort it out then I'm off to find a wall...

Paul, I am pleased to say mine are just right as well. In fact the main beam is excellent on stock bulbs - just a bit loathe to pass Heathrow at night   s:lol:  s:lol:

Got the car back yesterday, and they've done the lights. Properly. I can see again! So they had cocked up first time and admitted it.  s:roll:  s:roll:
