Title: Head unit wiring help
Post by: lron on December 6, 2015, 15:09
Sorry if this has been covered before but I couldn't find anything that helps. I tried to install a replacement stereo today hoping the wiring would be a case of plugging in adapters. Problem is it looks like it's been messed around with before. I can't figure out how the wires match up and the red, yellow and blue (power?) leads are taped together directly rather than going into a plug.

Is there a simple solution here or can anyone point me towards a wiring diagram? Google's only showing me MK2 wiring as far as I can tell.

I am sure there are others on here who maybe able to help. Looks as though somebody has had a non standard stereo already and bodged the wires rather than getting an adapter.

Just plug your new adaptor on it will work. Someone has just tapped into the oe wiring and not cut anything

Alright, thanks. I'll have to have a rummage around behind the glove box and see if I can find out what that's actually powering before I disconnect anything.

Turns out that was some kind of retro hands free unit wired in, quite professionally done underneath all that tape. I've removed a control box that was tucked up behind the glove box and a little speaker screwed onto the back of the ash tray. Microphone's staying in because it runs all the way up behind the dash and is stuck on next to the cabin light, would be a pain to remove and I can plug it into the new stereo anyway.

Still haven't actually fitted the new stereo because the ISO adapter I bought doesn't fit. Do PFL cars need a different adapter to FL? The one delivered looks like the below picture except there's 2 plastic prongs on the smaller plug stopping it from fitting. I also only see 1 wire on the corresponding plug from the car, with the pin in one of the middle holes, but I can't see anything on ebay that matches.

If anyone else comes across the same problem, I eventually found the answer on Spyderchat - the smaller of the 2 white connectors is only used if you have rear speakers installed. With the OEM wiring it just provides the head unit illumination, and most aftermarket units don't use it. Connected up without that one plugged in and it works fine.
