Hi, am a new member and was wondering if anyone had any experience of importing an MR2 from Japan, if so it would be great to hear it as it's looking like the best option for value for money at the moment but am very wary, any advice would be great. s:D :D s:D
PM or email 'JapGT300' - Adam runs a business bringing cars in from Japan and would be your best bet.
You've got to be very careful bringing in personal imports. VOSA are no longer letting any modified cars through an SVA. You also have to make sure that you can now get access to a model report. The charges have increased across the board and it is a hard market even for a trader.
I have been caught out myself and had to re-sell a car abroad because it wasn't allowed in the country. Many existing modified J-Spec MR2's are rising in value because of this. Check out the price on a mk2 turbo s:shock:  s:shock:
My advice would be to purchase a J-Spec that is already registered in the UK.
Can you expand on this Jap? When/why did this resriction on SVA come into force?
The legislation changed in April. It is a stupid government clampdown. No one is quite sure why they are trying to cease this market.
Stolen or written off cars? I can't see that that is possible or a big earner anymore.
Most importers websites have put disclaimers on to justify their prices.

Government legislation to be introduced on
01/04/04 will make it difficult or even
impossible for modified cars to be imported
from many countries including Japan. Due to
the small number here some may even
increase in value. Act now and secure the car
of your dreams.

Ouch s:? :? s:?
So, does the restriction just apply to sub-10yr-old vehicles with mods, or all SVA-liable motors?
That's a major bummer! s:? :? s:?
One of the cool thing about living in the UK was to be able to import mad j-spec cars...
The j-spec Mk.III has a killer gear box in it, and is usually fitted with loads of great after market stuff (not to mention the fact that they are usually much better looked after than cars in Europe.)
Maybe there's still a way of importing them through Ireland?

It applies to all SVA'able cars. Older cars can still come in and be registered with just an MOT.
Mine a j-import bought last year. Your right about the extras, I got TRD stage 2 bodykit and spoiler, Top Secret Cat back Exhaust (no main cat), HKS Intake, the PROPER gearbox which hurts your 0-60 but is set up to get the most from your engine (will just reach the rev limiter in 5th) at top speed. Plus only 17500 miles! on a 3 year old in immaculate condition!
This cost me £12500, but will be on sale mid summer for the UK asking price for its age/milage.
TRD lowered it too to the 'right' height s:wink:  s:wink:
