Title: Things are afoot...
Post by: vx220 on January 12, 2016, 22:12
A month or so ago, my amp died. Work has been draining, shall we say, so I have been buzzing about with no sounds (bar a rattly heatshield!)

Things are more settled, so after some research, pondering and mind changing, I have a new amp on order AND, winging its way from HK as we speak...

miniDSP!!!

Will I be the first to go fully active, be time-aligned and have 36 bands of fully parametric EQ in an MR2?

Active sub no, eq possible but then the 2 is more for driving than sound contests

That was quick! Sure you have it set up correctly? Not overloading the amp?

Fairly sure

Have also done some research on the tubes in front of the tweeters, and the feeling is they do the exact opposite of what you'd want them to do (basically you want anything in front of the tweeter to flare out and away from it, not bounce the sound down a tunnel, leading to constructive AND destructive reflections)

With the TA I will be able to move the tweeters inboard, so the actual tweeter sits in the OEM mounting "cup", removing the tube and OEM grille and use the miniDSP to delay the tweeters. I'll use some acoustic cloth to prevent the tweeters attracting thieves (and the prodding fingers of the kids I work with!)

Hoping that by removing these issues, and with the processing miniDSP offers I can smooth the sound a little. There is the possibility the harshness I had before was the amp being over-driven, but I don't think so. It just failed to work one morning

We'll see.

Now to start my constant whining regarding my work/weather interface issues again!

Can't whine about Car Audio Centre, ordered amp yesterday around noon, here at 15:00hrs, that was FOC delivery!

Amp is tiny...

Nothing flash, just tiny

4x45watts RMS, miniDSP will be the fun bit. Mega little thing, does so much for such a small price. Just hope I can sort the "laptop" side of it all...

I've looked at that before. Quite curious to see how you use it. When I looked it up I was just looking to use it as a crossover.

I think I'll start slow, so use it as a crossover and to set gains, then work through from there. I'll get it in and wired, get it sounding ok (and safe for the tweeters) then introduce the EQ and TA.

I need to EQ it at least twice, once for overall sound then tweak it independently left and right, that allows you to compensate for being so far off-axis for the drivers side speakers.

Exciting times!

There is some help available on the DIYMOBILEAUDIO.COM websiteand the minidsp website and email support, see how I get on!

I am either a lucky boy, or a very unlucky boy...

MR2 has been stolen from our driveway tonight, fortunately before I'd got my arse into gear installing! All they'll get is one tweeter, and a pair of well deadened doors...

Cheers

Has had a bigger effect on our fostering placement, he's pretty upset (although he used to get p'd off having shopping piled on his lap! I told him it was extra airbags...)

I'm laid back, so just cruising the classifieds!

Actually looking forward to sound deadening whatever I get next! Lol

I do fancy a hot hatch, sorry lads!

Sorry for your loss.

How does one steal an immobilised vehicle?
Why steel a 2? Not expensive and not too quick by modern standards.

I have thought about fitting the rainbows and an amp I have knocking about, but I am not sure if I want to add the extra weight and I love the sound of the VVT kicking in too much lol!
