Title: 280bhp?
Post by: CrazySX on January 16, 2016, 09:31
In my calculation, when taking a NA engine and applying 1 bar of boost, you tend to double your bhp figure.

Question is, would a 1zz cope with 1 bar of boost? And if so what supporting mods do you need?

Or does the engine need to come apart to drop compression?

What is the standard compression ratio?

Iirc 1zz was safe up to 240? Someone else will confirm. But I think it was around that before things needed changing.

Its all about torque keep it under 250lbft to be safe. 240 for longevity.

You can get 270 but I would hold at 260 to keep it max safe, this is on a stock engine and running around 10psi. 1 bar will have to be low comp but would return you over 300bhp

1bar gives 290-300hp on these on a gt28r on STD engine and 2.5"exhaust. Not sure how long for, so far I think I've done about 3000miles. But have spare engine in shed and another car on the drive )

240 lb torque
270 bhp
11 psi

Those are the figures that i believe the stock engine and gearbox can cope with.
Of course i have been known to be wrong.

If that's the case I would be well happy with that! What's 10bhp meh!

Just started reading ur build! Will be watching carefully to see what happens. I have a T28R  and the std 2.5 inch TTE exhaust. So yours is a good reference point.
Are you running a bar?

Thanks everyone else for the responses, they have not gone unnoticed

If he is mines a large anything.   s:lol:  s:lol:

Are you using a fair bit of oil Stu or is everything ok with the motor.
Still cant believe its not gone pop.

Have you ever seen a stock 1zz rod? They don't fill you with much confidence, they look like lollipop sticks compared to stock 2zz rods.

I reckon that keeping torque limited to 240lb/ft could make both the gearbox and rods viable. With proper boost and heat control, this makes 300bhp achievable. From memory, some of the MWR kits where rated to over 300bhp on stock internals.

Do you really think so Chris?
Always thought MWR were considered to be a bit economical with the truth.
I would like to find out one day.

Lost track a little over the many different variations so just did a data-log to check boost, seems i'm not running a bar no, (don't trust the analogue boost gauge as it shows about 15psi   s:lol:  s:lol:  )
Seems to be peaking about 13.8psi, so not far off a bar, but only holding from 12.8-13.2psi or there abouts gear dependant etc. so 0.95bar peak 0.9bar held

Oil wise its a weird one, the level drops like hell, then sits there for a while, I think whats happening is the engine burns a *little* oil, but with the level high(full), the turbo can't return properly to the sump and the turbo is burning a lot..  so I think the engines a lot healthier than I originally thought, but I just need to keep it only half full unless going on track. originally when it dropped to half i'd top it back up expecting it to go empty quick, but it just sits there at half full quite happily.  Can't really put the return in any higher, and its a nice enough size. so just have to accept half way on the stick(its a larger sump anyway so probably equal to a stock sump)

It's my gut feeling, which seems to be supported by various builds over the years. Engine and gearbox will no doubt have their lives shortened at these levels, but there is no such thing as a free lunch.
