Title: Front bonnet latch
Post by: Anonymous on December 6, 2004, 20:08
I have just had to rescue my brother - using jump leads to start his chevy corvette V8 (thats a different story).

Anyway, my god damn front bonnet refuses to shut properly (fortunatley it's still drivable as the manual level under the hood keeps it from flying open). But the latch seems not to spring shut, and the opening lever in the car is loose, as if the wire may have detached / snapped.

Has anyone had this problem? - Becasue the lever/wire in the vehicle feels quite loose, does this mean the closing latch will not operate? - Or would the fact it doesnt spring shut mean the latch has a default? - Also, if i do get it closed, would it be problematic getting it open without the interior lever in operation?

Fortunatley I have access to a ramp etc so can get in and around the vehicle quite easily, however, I have no manual. Anyone know the easiest way to get at the underside of the latch without major trauma?

Apologies for this long winded message, but as a fellow MR2 driver any help would be seriously appreciated!!!

Thanks!  s:( :( s:(

It does sound like the cable has streched, but I can't say for sure. You can see most of the latch mechanism (as I'm sure you know) with the bonnet open; you can gain access to the rest of that area by removing the front bumper, which isn't difficult.

I would imagine there is a way to adjust the cable tension, but again, I'm not too sure, one of the guys with a copy of the BGB should be able to help. Not much use to you this, is it! Sorry  s:oops:  s:oops:
