Title: sp240 worth the extra.....
Post by: tpivette on February 18, 2016, 09:15
Can anyone comment on SP240 MR2. I've owned a standard and 2zz mr2 and was looking for the next step up. How do they drive, any issues, what's good bad or ugly with them. I may have an option to purchase one soon so due diligence checks in order. Thanks if you can help.

Dont know what to say really.
Its a great kit.
I would imagine substantially quicker than a 2zz. 190max vs 240max.
Loads more torque too.
Boost comes in early but really comes alive above 5k rpm.

I had to have a new turbo last year. £400.
Probably down to giving it to much welly from cold before the oil got warmed up.
Fit a good boost gauge so you know how many psi you are making would have realised much sooner that things had gone pete tong.
I think i will get around to oil temp and pressure gauge too.
Will need an uprated clutch too. Mine is a helix. Fitted by matt.

If you think you may want more power in the future it may not be the best option.
Turbo is pretty maxed out. Replacing intercooler with charge cooler may add a few more horses.
If you think you may want 270+ could be better going custom with something like a gt2860rs.

I love mine to bits but do fancy more power so if finances improve may sell mine and go for something custom.
Thats mega bucks.

On a side note....
I second the remarks on gauges;
- oil temperature gauge, that's what you're looking for on turbo'd cars. The water temperature being at 90 is NOT a good indicator of whether the car is warm enough to start giving it the beans.
- boost gauge needs to be a good accurate one.

Boost gauge will let you know when there is potentially an issue, and oil temp gauge will help prevent issues  s:) :) s:)

I cant imagine a 2zz being anything like the sp240 kit. So much more HP and delivered entirely differently.

Great piece of kit, the hardest thing now would be finding one.

With the 2zz I prefer my Corolla Compressor and am still toying with the idea of putting it in the roadster. It gives power right from the off so no lag

^ Maybe, but for most people you're talking: new engine, new gearbox, cost of gearbox rebuild with diff being fitting etc etc etc.

Turbo kit (especially TTE and Silverstone Performance old kit) just bolts onto the car, no engine/gearbox removal required. A 240hp turbo roadster would also be considerably faster than a 215hp supercharged roadster IME.

The sp240 makes a very quick roadster. Plenty have said too fast!

The 2zz with a supercharger is a great engine.
Getting it in your 2 if you arent in possesion of the skills and equipment isnt so easy.

Having a mind blank as to which Turbo was fitted to mine, but it had similar performance to Scotts (some 40-70 rolling tests), although I mine was down about 20bhp from what it was set up to do.
Nice bit of torque in the turbo, very easy to live with on a day to day basis. As long as its relatively trouble free, definitely worth it over a 2zz.

I've owned and ran an SP200 and then upgraded to a SP240.  I've also owned and ran the TTE turbo on which the SP kit is based.

Out of the lot my fav would be a tough chocie between the SP200 and the TTE.   The SP200 had a very flat linear delivery.  It was fast but didn't feel fast, but it didn't try to kill you either.   The TTE felt as quick as the SP240 due to the way it boosts, but it wasn't by long shot as it pulls power up the RPM range.   That was fun and still fairly safe to drive still. Plus it had the best turbo stall sound on lift off I've ever heard in any car.

Now the SP240.  I had a love it, hate it relationship with that kit   s:mrgreen:  s:mrgreen:    It makes for a very quick MR2.  However since our cars have no stability control and are sensitive to minor things like cold, tyres, pressures and most importantly drivers like me with way too much stupid in their DNA, it did end up spitting me off the road.  Thankfully no damage at all, other than my pride.  Still, made me a better driver, but I always, always drove that car with a healthy sense of fear afterwards, which TBH spoiled the fun.

That's a shame, if it didn't feel right walk away. What stopped you buying it?

No! Been enjoying it whilst my Elise is off the road. Did a Wales trip with lotus's and a Lamborghini last year and the MR2 did not shame itself   s:D :D s:D   OK it doesn't have the precise control of a lotus, but in the right hands it's quite a capable fun machine! We have very good rubber and a Geo on it which makes quite a difference to handling and predictability. By no means a scary car to drive.
