Due to an outbreak of mad-cow (or more truthfully, just an outbreak of cows) I am now a pedestrian once more.
A large number of cows escaped from a farm near where I work last wednesday night. I was unfortunately the first person to find this out when I collided with a group of them on a national speed limit road at around 9pm. They were somewhat unexpected to say the least, and the collision was enough to put may car into a spin, colliding with one of the banks and writing it off.
At around midnight the police called to inform me that there were still a number of cows out and about, some having travelled some 5 or 6 miles.
(btw. neither driver or cow were badly injured, and yes, I am claiming against the farmers insurance).
Having finally had the car assessed by the insurance company, they have decided to fix it at a cost of 8 -> 8.5 K, and a duration 3 months.
So, for 3 months I don't have a car, and I'm currently still paying insurance on it in the interim.
The insurance company have refused to provide me with a courtesy car for that period of time, and cannot offer me any other option.
It's not until you need to use your insurance that you realise how useless insurance companies are.
Chris
That's really rubbish and seems to be fairly typical of insurance companies!
They're all to eager to take our money, but when it comes to them paying out / providing a service that you've paid them for it becomes a different matter s:roll:  s:roll:
It's something that really cheeses me off. Particularly as it's SOOOO expensive s:evil:  s:evil:
Here endeth my winge / rant s:wink:  s:wink:
As you are claiming against the farmers insurance (who I assume has accepted responsibilty for the incident), you can get a loan car through the repairers who then take on the task of recovering your uninsured loss (ie your policy excess and the cost of the car hire)
That may be a conversation I have with my insurance company when I get back from India in a week or so - if the farmers insurance company has admitted liability by that point then I'll see if I can get a courtesy car against his insurance.
The other worry I have is to the value of my car once the repairs are done - Parkers lists it at around 14K at the moment, but after 8.5Ks worth of repairs I assume that will plumet...
Chris
Can i ask who the insurance comapny is?
Sorry to hear it mate; there has been some bad luck stories posted today s:shock:  s:shock:

I've PM'd it to you.

Not only can you get a courtesy car but under our legal system you're entitled to one of at least similar quality.
Someone rearended a friend of mine's lotus elise, basically trashing it. As he was clearly not at fault the company got him a 2 month old BMW M3 to hack around in until his car was fixed.
Lemme see if I can find the company that does this...

There ya go. s:D :D s:D
Have you got Club Toyota with the car? If so check them out 08000 683 5000.
Also check out your car and house policies for Legal Protection clauses.
If all fails try Citizins Advice or maybe a short free advice from a solicitor in your area. You may even end up with whiplash s:wink:  s:wink:
Basically if the other guy is liable, then he has to pay up all your costs assuming they are reasonable, but, yes, I can understand you don't want to pay out a lot of money if you are not sure of reimbursement.

Well, I'm now back from India, and therefore needing a car.
So, first of all I phoned HelpHire to see if they can help me. Apparantly they will only deal with cases of accidents involving a second driver - ie, my case was too unique for them to take it.
Second, I phoned my insurance company to see if I could move my policy to another car whilst mine languishes in the garage for another month. After going through 4 different people, and over an hour of "debating" on the phone, they stuck to their line that I am not allowed to move my policy to another car whilst a claim is in progress. However, I am allowed to not renew my policy in January even though the repairs will not be complete at that point.
So, I'm left with either paying £100 for insurance on a £500 (group 9, 12 years old) car for a month, or being without a car.
I really, honestly, do not know where these guys get their idea of customer service from.
I'd made the assumption that whilst my car was being fixed, moving my insurance to a car 4 insurance groups lower and worth <5% of the value of my current car, would cost nothing. Apparantly I am wrong.
