Hi all,
I was wondering if it was possible to tune a 1zz engine to 200bhp in N/A form, and what would be involved? I did a search but didn't find anything. Can any of you shed any light on the subject? Would it cost stupid amounts of money??
Cheers

Oh yes.... I beleive it can be done, but you would be changing nearly all the internals and doing some serious headwork - it wouldn't really be a 1ZZ afterwards!
See w www.monkeywrenchracing.com (http://www.monkeywrenchracing.com) w for some ideas.
Yes, it would cost stupid amounts of money and I don't think you could get to 200. I'd guess 170. That's what I'm shooting for because I'm stupid.

The full race spec engine is advertised for $4995 USD minus $1000USD for your old engine. I work that out at £2250GBP (excl. import duty and delivery!!) with engine exchange - I thought the turbo kits cost more than this anyway..?
It certainly looks like any sort of decent power tuning costs a packet for the Roadster s:( :( s:( For a moment I had visions of a 1zz which revved over 10k rpm with 200 horses like a proper race engine s:D :D s:D
Race tuned 2ZZ-GE s:shock:  s:shock:
it would be cheaper and far more effective to replace the stock 1zz-fe with a 2zz-ge.......
kev
Does anyone know how much power can be sqeezed out of both the 2zz and 1zz with N/A tuning?
Both engines can be tuned to well over 200bhp. if you go for a race engine, i.e. a proper one with no compromises then they would get out pretty close numbers with the 2ZZ slightly ahead due to the design advantages.
If you are going for a road engine than the 2ZZ wins by miles because thanks to the VVL system it can be tuned considerably and still remain streetable.
A 1ZZ with over 200bhp will be getting a bit undrivable at low revs. If you can live with it it should make some nice power and be about 13kg lighter than the 2ZZ-GE but less reliable.
The main problem of the 1ZZ is that it is very easy to get a 2ZZ-GE over 200bhp so the 1ZZ will need a considerable ammount of money to match it and it will still not have any piston oil squirters or MMC cylinder liners or the awesome cylinder head or the VVL system or the camshaft oil sprinkler system or the host of other performance and reliablity oriented design choices. s:? :? s:?
MMC cylinder liners?
Yep. Metal Matrix Composite. Same stuff used in F1 s:wink:  s:wink:
If you find a pic of a 2ZZ block you can see that the cylinders are white in color as opposed to the normal silver.
Ah. I have all this money in my 1ZZ and am thinking of getting the MWR 2.0 (something less, really) big bore kit just because that's about all that's left besides flywheel and P&P, so I was wondering about that. Maybe I should have not bought all that stuff and planned on a 2ZZ swap. Or I could be happy with what I have... in some kind of dream world. s:lol:  s:lol:
Well if you can get the 2L big bore kit and do some port work with nice cams I am sure you will have 200hp easily and drivable(because of the 2Liter capacity)and with more torque than the 2ZZ. I would be happy if I were you s;) ;) s;)
