Hello everyone,
Noticed my n/s rear brake was binding on yesterday when coming home from work took the wheel off this morning and saw the handbrake cable was moving freely so its not that.
Tried to free lower nut on caliper with no joy but rounded off abit in the process! Think it was a 12mm!
Any ideas?
Jim
First I guess you could try turning the slider, its nut shaped on the end also.
lots of plusgas first.
worth trying the top bolt , if removed the calliper can be bashed/swivelled and might break the other bolts hold.
failing that I'd take the whole calliper off the car and use a vice / angle grinder.
Locking pliers (mole grips) will shift it. Before you start buy a new bolt. It shouldn't shear off but it's possible. If it does you'll need to be prepared to drill out and re-tap the caliper support bracket on a bench.
I bought a caliper rebuild kit which includes the slider rubbers: m http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/371210353842? ... EBIDX%3AIT (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/371210353842?_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2648&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT) m
Are you using a 12-point or 6-point socket. Six pointers are less likely to round it off and will often deal with one that is a little rounded.
The 12mm bolt is one of the sliders (bottom one) the top slider does not unbolt. If you're going to replace the rubbers, put some heat to the slider where the 12mmm bolt screws in. Holes expand more than bolts, so it will help to loosen it.
Thanks does anyone know where I can source the bolt from?
I was using a 12 point socket. End up hitting the caliper with a rubber camping mallet to free it off slightly
Jim
Try and get the bolt out with a six-pointer and some heat. You need to save that bolt if you can.
Here's a pic of the slider off the car. You can see where the sliding bolt goes. That's where you want to apply the heat. The two bigger holes hold the caliper assembly to the hub.

Thanks Carolyn and others just wish I could get a new one or not even started it!!!
Jim
Stick at it.. it's really not that bad!!
Here's hoping I manage it, will try again this afternoon, thanks for advice Carolyn
Jim s:) :) s:)
If you haven't got the socket - get thee to Halfords. A set of long metric six-pointers will make your life so much easier for so many little jobs on the car.

a quick search says yes. there's probably cheaper out there.

Or you could try MrT.
They are not that expensive last time I checked.
Ended up getting sided tracked today but will try again tomorrow sometimes I find if you can't do something and leave it for a while then go back to it you can manage it no bother i.e usually the rest of the cake in my case s;) ;) s;)

Ridiculous!
Finish the cake at the first sitting or just dont bother at all.
Me too sometimes , but I think it's just the penetrating fluid and a rest makes it all go better the next day.
Hope you get the bolt released.
I feel your pain in the frustration of good intentions and things throwing spanners in the works at the early stages.
Yesterday hat a cheap, sh1tty magnetic sump bolt shear off on me as I was torquing it back up after draining the car.
Fortunately after a lot of swearing and cursing that it was going to thwart my trackday booked for Monday, I managed to work the remnant of the bolt out of the sump usng the sheared head (fortunately was a ragged shape that had enough ridge to key into the remainder of the thread and with some forcing and jiggling (and a few gentle taps with a fine head screwdrivier to twist it out. But it was not amusing!
Back on subject.........is there any specific grease needed to be used inside the slider pins/rubber (as the calipers get hot when in heavy use obviously)?

You could try this

CV joint Lithium grease (the black stuff) also works well - but I suspect the melting point of the Ceratec will be higher.
Ceratec is the way to go
OK, so maybe I'm being an idiot, but...
I need to replace my rear caliper slider bolts.
I can find replacement front slider bolts - m http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm?itemId=231703525994 (http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm?itemId=231703525994) m
I can find rear caliper repair kits including pin guides - m http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/331565989163?_mwBanner=1 (http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/331565989163?_mwBanner=1) m
But I can't find rear caliper slider bolts themselves.
Are the rear bolts the same as the fronts?

If anyone is able to shed any light on this sooner than later, that would be awesome as I'm hoping to do the job this weekend and need to order something soon s:) :) s:)

Totally agree...for proof,I have a Ford Probe notorious for seizing rear calipers, had to grease them up twice a year.....used Mintex Ceratec about 6 years ago and tbh I haven't touched them since, even passed the mot on Saturday lol.

Phone big red they should be able to help.
I tried brakeparts.co.uk but they only had fronts listed.
Just rang round a local motor factors, Brakeparts UK, Bigg Red and ended up having to go to MrT.
£30 for 2x sets of rear slider bolts, bushes and boots.
Brakeparts UK had them listed as in stock but didn't actually have them in, but having been made aware of that, will be ordering in some in that will arrive in 2-3 weeks.
Bigg Red said if I got dimensions for them, they could probably supply something as a kit, so when I have the official MrT ones, I will post their dimensions here so anyone else who needs these can try going the Big Redd route.
Don't suppose you had any joy in the end?
My rear sliders are looking worse for wear, can still be undone by an adjustable spanner so greased them up.
The top rubber boot on the 'fixed' slider looks torn on one side too. Don't know if I'm perhaps best to use it as an excuse to get all the callipers refurbed instead at the same time
No, I totally forgot to put the details up, sorry. As I said, went to MrT in the end. Had to get the garage to put them on when she was in for something else as the old ones were so destroyed, I couldn't get a hex head on them properly.
For reference roughly £1.14 exc. VAT for each rear caliper slide bolt, and £9.99 exc. VAT for the boot I mentioned. 2 day delivery.
Nice find, well done!
