Title: Is it me or!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Post by: Anonymous on December 27, 2004, 18:52
Have I got it wrong or do all these people with Xenon/blue/uprated front lights dazzle you from behind & oncoming even when they remember to dip them.

Is it a trait that the light is so intense that it spreads outwards & upwards?

More & more cars seem to be dazzling me every evening.

If these bulbs are fitted (and have nothing against having more light to see more road) do your lights require re-aligning or are all these cars headlights mis-aligned already!!!!!!!

I think more and more modern cars have the ability to adjust the headlights, however 99.9% of drivers dont know what it means and just have them set to high all the time.

Remember though in the 2' you are a lot lower so will suffer more.

Maybe someone should invent adjustable rear fogs so you can blind the person behind you.

On that note, have you noticed how many "crap" cars are driving with fogs and side lights on, normally cheap people carries.

and does anyone else get headaches from them?

Yup.

I get my own back though, mainly by either putting full-beam on, or braking hard or putting my rear-fog on.

They soon get the message.   s:twisted:  s:twisted:

Very good points!

Used to blind people all the time in the Volvo as if you accelerated hard the front end lifted so high the headlights would shine in oncoming drivers faces. It took me a while to work out why people were always flashing me.

I find altering your mirror (that little tab that adjusts the angle) helps when they are behind.

Well I love my Xenon's.. have loads of people flash me.  I thought they were admiring them too..obviously not.  s:lol:  s:lol:

IIRC Cartell it is illegal to have xenon's as main beams..I know my xenons are only the sidelights, main beam are halogen projectors, so you should effectively never be blinded by xenons on high beam, IE people who have forgot to dip, they are almost certainly on dipped.

I have noticed the Xenons seem to dazzle more, and its worse in the '2 because your so low down. I find the worst offenders are the newer Mazdas fitted with Xenons. Even with the interior mirror set to its anti dazzle setting, I got home after being followed by one looking like this;   s:shock:  s:shock:
My pet hate is BMW drivers and Peugeot 406 owners, who seem to think that driving / fog lights need to be on all the time. Seems to be endemic in owners of these makes of car. (Takes whingeing head off.)

i had that done only recently, but the wierd thing is that as soon as those lights glint at me i get a mild pain, very strange i can tell you, and it dissapears as soon as the lights gone, i'm no doctor so you go figure  s:? :? s:?

You need to adjust your mirrors  s;) ;) s;)  I have mine set up so that I don't really see the car behind me...the side mirrors just show the other lanes, cause I noticed my cars sides seem to stay there even if I don't see them  s8) 8) s8)  And the interior mirror is aimed high enough, so it won't catch even truck lights. I've been quite happy with the way they are...

But they must look cool, cause every car photo on Maxxxx Powah has the fogs on  s;) ;) s;)

Seriously, if anyone behind you has their fogs on, put your rear fog lights on! There might be fog between your cars! If someone comes towards you with fogs on, just pull the light switch for hi beams  s;) ;) s;)

I find the absolute best thing to do is, if your passing them slow enough point them out and mouth "you have your fogs on" they really are gobsmacked, because they're not sure if your serious or not.  s:lol:  s:lol:

I do a lot of driving on unlit country roads, and with the interior mirror on its anti dazzle setting, I find I can barely make out the shape of the car behind, but still see its headlights obviously.
Coming home the other night, after a spurt of spirited driving,   s:twisted:  s:twisted:  I noticed the car behind was keeping pace, and was curious as to the make of car that was keeping up with me. I flicked the mirror onto its normal setting, and whilst I forget the make, I did then notice the sign on top of the car saying 'Police'   s:oops:  s:oops:    s:oops:  s:oops:    s:oops:  s:oops:
I didn't get pulled, so I must have been behaving reasonably well. (The road was damp so I was being a bit careful!)
The moral of the story is, however you set your mirrors, always be aware of who is behind you!  s:roll:  s:roll:

I don't quite understand this obsess ional hatred of driving with your front fogs on  s:? :? s:?  . If like me your commute is along very dark, twisty, and unlit roads then you'd find the additional illumination useful in highlighting the kerbs. After all the lights are very low down and shouldn't present a hazard to on coming traffic.

I can understand the argument for minimal use of rear fog lights, as they're a pain in the ar*se, but I for one like to see were I'm going.  s:wink:  s:wink:

Go on then, shoot me down in flames!    s:flame: :flame: s:flame:

I take your point..but unless your crawling along your not going to be looking that close to the front of the car.  If you are you will almost certainly hit whatever it is thats in front of you.

Don't agree Mike,

I find it very useful for my peripheral vision and for setting the car up on the apex. Beleive me at 6am on an a quiet road I'm not crawling!  s:wink:  s:wink:

Perhaps it's just me.

I only mention it because whenever I've been taught by an instructor on tracks, they always say you should look ahead, and that you should never look close to the front of the car. I've found it to be wise words.  If your constantly looking for apexes, you can't see exit points, vehicles in the way etc. In effect you would have set up the cars line for the apex way before you actually get there, when your at the apex in question you should be looking at the next apex. All racing cars have nada periph vision because your only concentrating on what up ahead.

I realise that on the road its different to a race track, but i still really don't see the need for fog lights.  Heck my 350Z hasn't even got them come to think of it!

But by all means if you find them useful carry on using them!   s:wink:  s:wink:

Ever looked how far the fog lights actually light? If you're going above 20mph with the fogs on, you have already hit whatever you saw with the fog lights, before you react to it  s:? :? s:?  Also, human eye sucks in the matter that a bright frontal area decreases visibility behind it. And I don't know about anyone else, but I'm more interested in what's happening a bit further in front of me, not seeing stuff too late to avoid it...

Not to mention they are a PITA when used in dark on wet roads  s:shock:  s:shock:

Sorry guys, I'm with Andy, apart from the fact that its illegal - isn't it?

Just to have the knowledge of where the white lines are (particularly on the LHS gives me better confidence).

As said very much peripheral because when I drive I do with a general "all over" view - unlike some of the ba***rds on the road who seem to drive with tunnel vision, which even excludes the rear view mirrors!.   s:evil:  s:evil:  rant over and relax, after a particularly bad trip to Brum and back on the M40 on Tuesday.

When I said anti dazzle, I just meant the tab under the mirror that flips the mirrors angle up by a few degrees, leaving a fainter reflection of whats behind. I assume even pre '04 models have them ?!?
I dont have fancy photo chromatic doo-dah's or those auto dipping ones like my friend has on his new Corolla. Quite good though so he recons...

sorry, i thought you were talking about the photo-chromatic ones, i really wish we had these fitted. I seem to remember there was a GB for an after market version about 18months ago, perhaps we could find the details and do another one, provided it's not too expensive??
