i need to cut and grind out the 3 studs located in the bottom of the cubby holes under the floor lining, but i'm a bit worries about sparks damaging the carpet, wireing, linings, etc.
any idea's on doing this safley?

Our gas fitters at work us a burning mat when they are blow torching pipes. You should be able to get one of these from a good DIY store or Plumbing Merchant for a couple of quid.

A junior hacksaw will cut them down to within 2 or 3 mm of the bottom of the cubby, which is good enough for most applications, generates no heat and no risk of fire.
