Title: GPS based speed camera detectors
Post by: Tem on January 9, 2005, 19:39
Anyone familiar with these? Can one insert cam positions into these himself, or is it somehow automated?
(surely won't cover Finland anyway)

Just happened to bump into a list of finnish speed camera locations and after a bit of Googling noticed that these are kinda popular (or at least very well advertised) in UK. And cause we seem to be getting more and more these and now they can be hidden as well...  s:? :? s:?

Hi Tem,

There are a multitude of different "GPS" based Speed Traffic Locators - they mostly work on a very simple principle, that there is a longitute and latitude for every location on earth.

This obviously includes speed camera - in the UK a subscription is required in almost all cases, as inevitably the UK police force along with the local speed prevention committes (can't remember the exact name) are installing more and more.

As for using it in Findland - Hmmm well i understand that Morpeheous, who make the Geodosey, the Road Pilot and other such models do cover europe, but not as yet Findland, I don't think.

But - they all have way point locator buttons, thus you can programme it yourself, but the useful speed sensing capabilites of the unit don't work for user locations, just the actual location.

Tem - why not contact one of the companies and offer to trial a unit, it could well be an untapped location for them and with people like yourself willing to trial them and make a note of locations, etc... it could be the start of a beautiful friendship.

Cheers

Tem, try http://www.poihandler.com they do "points of interest" for most european country's and may do Finland. If they do then you can link it into tomtom and useing poiwarner, hey presto, you have an excellent satnav/GPS camera warner
