Title: Worst insult you've had about your car.
Post by: John is200sport on July 27, 2016, 22:00
Sorry if this has been posted before or similar.

I've had my car two weeks and expected some friendly banter etc from my class 1 lorry driver mates (had nothing actually)

But I was sitting with the top down outside my girlfriends work (local corner shop) to pick her up and a guy pulled up in a van to go to the shop with two young children (about 6 years old) and the young boy must of said something and the father said "it's a girls car" not once but twice.

He didn't say it to my face but walked passed the passenger side and must of seen me. Quite annoyed me and slightly upset me. Almost wanted to educate this fool on rwd, mid engine, lsd, power to weight etc.

Any stories?

So a white van man didn't like it? As a class 1 myself, I'd take that as more of a compliment than an insult!!  s:lol:  s:lol:

Thankfully no.

Only positive comments
Have noticed recently, a lot kids maybe 5 -9 year olds looking out the windows of people carrier vehicles in amazement. You just know they have never seen one, but they know it's "right"
Even spoke to one as his dad was talking to him about it. Gave him a blip of throttle as we sat at the lights. Little face lit up.
Obviously been cocooned and isolated from sound up until then. (BMW 5)

As a tongue in cheek
On the  little wind deflector that pops up behind the seats.
I think StuC has a little infographic. "no hair dressing items left in car"

He does indeed, followed that round Paris a few years ago:

Female friend (who drives a boggo Honda Civic) saw the MR2 in our drive and commented on the 'hairdressers car'.
She doesn't know much about cars.

I've had a couple of MX 5 comments.

Until you point out that the engine is actually at the right end. Interestingly, it brought out a discussion with one person about small British traditional two seaters which do mostly have the engine at the front. Jaguars and the MGF excepted, there are very few mid-engined British cars.

Either way, I don't care what people think. I do love winding up the Lids in their Corsas.

Plenty have thought its a porker. No toyota badges on mine.
Kids love em.
Most blokes say its a girls car even those who like cars.
My wife is a girl and she loves it so maybe they have a point.  s;) ;) s;)
Everyone is obsessed with huge power figures.
Brand snobery plays its part too.
So few people understand about ptw and handling.
Or the shear fun on open top motoring.
Sod em.
Their loss.

I dont care what anyone else says or thinks, it's a great car and i don't need a substitute car for a small di**. Those who make snide comments are probably too insecure to drive such a small car no matter how much fun.

My mates rib me constantly about the MR2 but not as much about the S2000. Doesn't bother me as it's just banter with them.

Anyone else is entitled to their opinions I guess, I'm guilty as are many on here of criticising other brands of car so why should we expect any different.

While it is a great car, I do sometimes feel a bit of a girl with the roof down!  Lol

And I have long hair! But hey do I really care, no.

You want to see the reactions you get driving an Alfa, "Should I call the AA, while at petrol garage"!   s:shock:  s:shock:

1999 GTV 2.0 Lusso. Only gremlin was that the central locking only worked when you locked the passenger side door   s:lol:  s:lol:
Currently a 2002 Alfa 147 1.6 (Accidental eBay purchase for 225 quid) thats just sailed through its MOT for the 2nd year running.  Only thing that I have done is general servicing along with the cambelt/variator service

The style of the car is all "cute and bubbly" so I can entirely see the girl car comments.. I refer to mine constantly as the LGC (little gay car)...  It's entirely the setup and feel of the drive that makes me love it, I don't have any particular love for the looks personally but don't hate them either. you can't see it from the drivers seat anyway  s:D :D s:D  best handling car I've ever driven hands down. (not sure if that says more about the car or other cars ive driven!!)

You seemed to have been lucky or got a well looked after one.  I had oil cooler pipes leaking, thermostats going, clutch going and taking gearbox with it - but still loved it.  Replaced it with a 350Z 2 years ago, which I also love but in a different way.  You just cannot love a jap car like an Italian car.

The Brera are really nice, the GT looks a little dated now, I would go for a Brera, besides you get the V6 - hubba hubba

Advantage of the Alfa unit is that its mated to a FWD gearbox so should be easier to persuade into place

would be interesting to understand the difference are between the 3.2V6 in the Maserati and the 3.0V6 in the alfa (apart from capacity)... but it works out to something like 80 or 90 bhp!

But I could totally appreciate that there are more alfa's knocking about than Maserati's!

think the internals of the Maserati engine are more Ferrari orientated but could not be specific.

If i did not need a 5 door for rmy daily, A GT would be on the drive.
Agree, semi dated from some angles. But to my eyes at least still a handsome looking car. Do prefer the rear to the front.A 159 front would have worked very well.
Think some of thre diff beetween 3.0 vs 3.2. The 3.0 is all Alfa. 3.2 poss GM derevitive.
Will dig out that youtube clip of v6 with Fez airbox. (Have kleenex on standby)

it'll be around 16 years ago, I had an Alfa 146 (the one with the boot).

Genuinely worst car I've ever owned. It was just over 3 years old and I had nothing but problems with it.
Brake master cylinder went (fortunately, I persuaded Alfa to pay half). That cost me my first born.

And when the brakes went, they went. Bear in mind this was around 2000. I went to the garage and even they were mystified by the pricing. Despite being independent and using anyone who would supply them parts, the only place they could find them was Alfa themselves. Disks and pads all round were something daft like £500 plus labour. I think Alfa had already said they would do it for £700.

They were so embarrassed that they fitted them for free and I only paid for parts - they even showed me the invoice to prove it.

I had loads of other problems with it (buttons broke off, central locking stopped working, sunroof leaked etc.).
I only kept it for a year and bought a Rover 75, for which I did over 100,000 trouble free miles.
