Title: Audio Upgrade
Post by: Essex2Visuvesi on August 4, 2016, 18:32
Considering upgrading my Current speakers to this:-
 m http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/182029683526 (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/182029683526) m

And then adding one of these to improve the punch a little:-
 m http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/351453503272 (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/351453503272) m

Will be adding an Amplifier to the existing Headunit (Pioneer aftermarket)
 m http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/231733428024 (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/231733428024) m

what are peoples thoughts?

I have a focal subwoofer.  These make a huge difference to the sound.

I think the PG and the focal are too big to tuck under the dash on the drivers side, as per most roadster installs?

I wondered about something that sort of size in the passenger footwell, suitably protected?

If you want to tuck up under the dash, next to the steering column, there is a void seemingly made for either Pioneer tswx120a, the similarly sized Kenwood and the InPhase usw10

From past experience with the Pioneer, I'm 98% sure I could squeeze the woofer part of the Alpine SWE1200 up there, but I found the best way to be sure was to make models of the enclosures to be sure

Some members have put various active subs in the compartments behind the seats, but apparently with worse results than the under dash mountains

Interested to see how you get on, please keep us updated?

Ivr got the inphase usw10 under my dash and it improved the overall sound quality (even on stock speakers with new Sony head unit) to no end.

I was looking at how much these were these days, to fit into Helen's car. But these things have gone up in price massively!
I paid 100 quid a couple years ago. On special offer they're now about 135...what happened there??

Fits very nicely and works very well, but a bit pricey at the minute.

What happened there?
Raw materials have gone up in price.
Chineese wages have gone up.
And i am not sure if you noticed but recently the pound has fallen.

It's been like this for a while  s:) :) s:)  I reckon these subs have fallen into favour and all proper discounts are off. Mine was on offer, and a good one, for 100. But the retail wasn't far off from what it was.

Sounds about right to me.
I have had these in my watch list for a while but was waiting for the price to drop again. Probably unlikely to due to the pound now!
Oh well, dont listen to the stereo that much.

I'd be interested in alternatives around the same size and power of the usw10

I'm interested in the usw12, against the headboard in the passenger footwell, seems to be two usw10s together?  Or the focal/phoenix gold in the same place? There is also a BassFace version of the focal/phoenix gold, with an infrasonic filter, could be useful.

Nearly back into an mr2, looking to go a bit better (bigger?) than the Pioneer I had previously (TSWX120A)

Will be out with the tape measure over the weekend

Have a search through my old posts, I amused my neighbours by using a frying pan as a simulated Usw10, and a cornflakes box cut up and re-made into the dimensions of a TSWX120A!

Easy to take out the dashpanel under the steering column

I would happily take a pic, but the posting is a problem... Lol.

Still it is sitting behind the passenger seat, held securely by the seat but also large amounts if Velcro strips.

Quick point: it's 10% kit and 90% install.

Sound deaden your door skins. Try and seal the inner door skins as best you can.  Mass load the speaker mount points and re-inforce it if you can. Mount the speaker securely in the door with an isolating gasket. "punch" comes from bass and mid bass from your door speakers. Don't try and fake it with a sub crossed over too high. Sub is for Sub bass, I.e. Rumble and 'feel'.

Plus set up. Phasing, cross over points, a bit of EQ. That's what counts.

Don't forget £100 on sound deadening, ply wood, fixings and cables.

That's for a "proper" install though. I still reckon adding a simple usw10 and better headunit increased the overall enjoyability of my system at least 10x.
The head unit makes an immediate difference in sound quality, probably because the amp is so much better. Brings out the best of the (crap) oem speakers.
Then the usw10 or the like takes a load off the oem speakers by taking over the lower end a bit, allowing the oem speakers a bit more freedom to take on the midrange.
You indeed don't get the "punch" as much but the overall result is at least 10x more pleasant.

One of the biggest issues with the usw10... Lag. Bass lag. It can be quite noticeable at times.

Having said that... I want to do all of the things JoeCool wrote haha.

& after all that it still won't be as good as a decent install in a saloon. Our small cabins really don't lend themselves well to good accoustics

Probably not, but it will be an improvement over the farts I'm getting now

Undoubtedly.
I'll include estates & hatchbacks in there too. The Mrs' Honda Accord estate sounds are superb

I have to say, the stock audio system in our old Audi A5 was pretty damn impressive. Best I've heard in a stock system. Didn't even have the upgraded system.

The way I've got the sound system now in the MR2 it means I can enjoy my music, top up or top down, at any speed.

The Bose/Panasonic system in the RX8 is pretty good too.
I just want to improve whats there and quality components and a decent head unit are a good start

My little active sub, together with amped components in well-deadened doors was miles better than the Buy Other Sound Equipment in the RX (at least with the roof up!)

My next system (in the Roadster I put a deposit on today, pick it up next week) will hopefully be even better. When mine got stolen, I was in the middle of upgrading to a fully active system with time alignment and a mega EQ.

The BOSE systems are good, but a well installed aftermarket system (mine only cost about £450ish) will monster it.

Loving forward to door-deadening, I find that very therapeutic!

This could be a medical issue, nothing to do with speakers!  s:D :D s:D

Had a little measure up in the footwell's this afternoon

Some of the active subs I've had my eye on aren't going to work, amazing how much stuff there is above the passenger's feet!

So, having taken some inspiration from a thorough googling (and discovered the SLK solution) I may end up with two of these  m http://www.kenwood-electronics.co.uk/ca ... /KSC-SW11/ (http://www.kenwood-electronics.co.uk/car/amp_spk/com/KSC-SW11/) m

I previously had one Pioneer version of this tucked up under the dash, by the steering column, but they're now £140 (up £40) It was good, but I always wanted a little more with the top off.

As the Kenwood doesn't seem to have suffered the same price increase, I thought I'd post one up under the dash in the same way I did with the Pioneer, and one in the passenger footwell (either along the pseudo-transmission tunnel), or against the kickpanel, or maybe right at the end of the passenger footwell facing up someone trouser leg or skirt!

Then run my component speaker actively from the miniDSP through the little class d Pioneer four-channel amp, and away we go...

...subject to work commitments and weather!

Bose really is not good.  Components of Bose are cheap.  Aftermarket will know bose's socks off.

Having said that music is like wine, everyone has a preference    s:D :D s:D

The BOSE system in my Mokka is absolutely pants.

To the point where only a year later, they entirely re-engineered the entire system, moving the speakers around the car, completely changing the phased crossovers and installing a proper sub.

It's not a joke when I say many tunes on the radio, you can't actually hear the singing, because they've managed to almost entirely EQ it out.
Fellas with high voices and women with low voices are the worst.

Thing is, there are very few settings too - only a treble and bass (and it's the mid that's missing).

My £100 cheap chinese android head unit and the alpine speakers (albeit entirely deadened doors) sound a thousand times better.
It was to the point where I thought it was me and I went for a hearing test!
