after reading a few posts just recently about more engine failures, its got me thinking and worrying again about the build quality of the MR2 engine.
I know people have suggest gutting the pre-cats to help the problem but just out of interest, has there been any engine failures reported after the pre-cats have been gutted??
Ive gutted mine so i'm hoping this is my saving grace from the dreaded engine failure.
Suppose i'm just looking for some reassurrances cos i would hate to have to get rid of my 2
cheers
Alan
I'm now on 40k miles (pre-cats were gutted a while back) and it has never missed a beat or used oil, so I would hope that it will caeey on as strongly for a good while yet - unless the boost kills it!
The pre cats on my 03 started to fall apart at 10K so I helped them with a screwdriver s:? :? s:?
I now have 25K on the clock without trouble, use no oil.
I dont think anyone has blown a known good engine after gutting the pre cats but I might be wrong.
I'm very much a novice when it come to the 2 and a little concerned over these pre cat stories so perhaps some one could enlighten me on the following?
- What signs do you get when they start to go?
- How do gut them and at what cost etc.?
- When/what mileage should I start worrying?
As my car is only six months old I've got plenty of warranty left so I'm not to concerned at present but I am wondering if I need to do something to prolong the ownership or at what point I should start to think about getting shut.
Thanks,
Andy
if nobody answers the above questions use the search tool and enter pre-cats AND gutting. This should answer all your questions as those questions have been covered many times before
heres my quick answers to your questions
loss of oil is a sign
you gut the pre-cats out of your manifold. This can be done by yourself with the help of a screw driver and hammer.
there doesnt seem to be any set mileage when the problems can occur
