Title: Mono or 2-channel sub?
Post by: Anonymous on January 19, 2005, 02:35
Ah, I return to the section of my first post on here...!

I'm currently sorting out a sub/amp combo for the car, and am looking for an amp at the moment. My question is as per the title: mono or 2-channel amp?

Am I right in thinking that the mono one only powers the sub? And that the 2-channel one would power the speakers as well (Focals, as per my sig)? Or am I in completely the wrong place here?!

Appreciate any help anyone can give on this, ta!   s:D :D s:D

In an ideal world you need 3 channels... one for left door, one for right door, and one for the sub...

Not many people make 3 channel amps though, so you can use a 4 channel one like I did. one channel for the left, one for the right, and the 3rd and 4th channels bridged together (thus doubling the power) to go into the sub...

or go the full hog like i've done, one 2 channel amp for the fronts, one 2 channel amp for the rears and a 500w rms amp for the sub, gonna sound divine, if i don't go deaf first!!  s:D :D s:D

So if I went for the mono amp, and just powered the sub, would that be ok? I'm pretty happy with the volume my Focals put out through the head unit, I'm just after a bit of bass for when the top's down in the summer.

Get a Blaupunkt TSA 460, and you can power all three speakers, have complete control over the sound, and hide it under the luggage bins...

Little bit out of my price range unfortunately, but looks an awesome piece of kit!

Basically I'm getting the whole lot installed by a local company, as I'm crap at stuff like this, and the mono amp is what was recommended to me (this one actually (http://www.alpine-europe.com/alpine/english/p298.products_amplifiers_mrp-m350_class-d-mono-power-amplifier.htm)), I'm just a little concerned now that it's gonna way overpower the Focals and drown out any treble and mids I've already got. It'll be powering a JL Audio 10" sub.

You'll probably find that in order to maintain a balance betwwen your mid-highs, and your bass, you'll need to turn the gain right down... You'll have better results if you use a high pass filter on the door speakers, which will enable them to concentrate on the higher range stuff, and leave the bass to the sub.. This will have the effect of making them sound "louder", and they wont rattle the doors so much without the bass frequencies going to them...

Title: JL 300/4

I'd suggest a JL Audio 300/4. Use the front set of channels for your components and bridge the rear channels for your sub. With this, you'll give your front components 75 watts a piece and you'll be giving your sub 150 watts bridged mono. The sound...crystal clean. The amp puts out full power at a variety of ohm loads and a variety of input voltages. I'm sold on JL amps.

By the way...new member here from Spyderchat. Wish we could get 6-speed manuals over here in the US.
