Title: Fan on engine lid
Post by: andy bird on October 25, 2016, 19:45
Working through my turbo conversion prep and thinking about the cooling.  Has anyone fitted fans to the engine compartment lid successfully?

The Engine deck sits in an area of low pressure behind the roof - as such air is pulled up through it at a very good rate anyway. I suspect that most fan arrangements would actually impede flow more than help it. I suppose ducted fans sitting on an intercooler could be of benefit, if that's your plans, although you'd run into the subaru problem of your intercooler becoming an interwarmer when it's sat over a hot engine.

The fans came with the TTE turbo and definitely helped.

Jason (Ardent) has an outstanding genuine TTE turbo car.  It has fan.  I had a chance to look at it at our last meet-up.  Sweet!  We discussed it and both thought that the fan should suck instead of blow.. Since then, I've thought about it and blow makes sense.  Suck would draw the engine-bay heat through the charge cooler, blow keeps that bit cooler.

That was my thought you see and also the SW20 turbos run twin fans.

I believe Headcase does a kit of sorts

Andy

Headcase. (Patrick) Do  search on here.
I understand he is working on such a thing. Not sure how far he has progressed.

Tip one.
If you search the technical resources thread on here you will find the TTE fitting guide.
May be helpful.

Heads up one
The TTE fan as designed by MrT. As Carolyn states, blows air into the engine bay.
(there is a thread somewhere started by me that  explores why the fan blows rather than sucks)
This is controlled by a dedicated thermostat that feeds back to the TTE piggyback ECU.

Suggestion one.
If you check out the Leicester rebooted thread in the events section.
Come along to the proposed meet up and you can meet some fellow nutjobs (enthusisasts) and eye spy a TTE fan in the flesh.
Northants is within striking distance of the proposed meeting point.

from readings and i think it has merit but the engine lid is in a dead zone and air is drawn in through it as there is a low pressure zone created from the rear bumper.

I am going with Toyota on this one.
They designed the fan to suck air in and blow directly over the turbo and manifold.
Hope to have one fitted very soon.
My engine bay is like a blast furnace.

C-one scoops lower bay temp by about 20c

Was that Mr X final conclusion or have you done your own reaserch?

As to airflow into and out of the engine bay, I do recall at least one old thread on this, where a couple of longstanding members had spoken to senior technical people from Toyota in Germany, at a show there. Now, finding that thread, is possibly difficult, nowadays.

Patrick (Headcase) recently made a template from my TTE fan so he can pretty much make you an exact copy. I would get in touch with him if you're interested.

Patrick's

The TTE drip tray has a Toyota prepared cutout. Now that Patrick has this template for the hole and fan bolt locations, any drip tray can be converted.

What solution has been arrived at re thermostat?

That thread had one of the members, mentioning this, but there was a thread much older than that one, somewhere.
Markiii was the chap I meant though. I have also wondered how the airflow is affected, when no nappies are fitted, as is the case on many cars. I had a Spal fan on my V6, which used a thermostat switch from a mk2. Interestingly, that took air upwards, out of the lid, which was not good, when moving at speed, but quite effective at very slow speed or stationary.
On that car, it only ever got hot enough to run, when in slow traffic anyway.

Had a bay temp gauge so not exactly logged like Mr x but visually noticed a 20c drop on the gauge between no scoop and scoop fitted. Obviously tho when in traffic makes 0 difference.

the fan sounds like a good idea, but it's worth checking that the hot air can escape well enough,
