Title: 3D Printed Key
Post by: DrWatson on November 10, 2016, 13:54
I wanted a unique key and I have some spare parts for my 2 so here it is.

First the key and parts were modeled in Autodesk Inventor to produce the following

From these drawings and using a UP Plus2 3D printer extruding Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) the key being formed in two halfs can be shortly below.
First the printer forms a scaffold to base the object on.

There after layers are formed step by step.

This results in two halfs. I have used two part epoxy to keep the key in place.

And finally you insert the internals and you end up with...

I've got some of the Mrs nail paint which I'm temped to use to fill in the toyota logo and others.
I already know that the lock and unlock are the wrong way round   s:? :? s:?  so no need to tell me  s:lol:  s:lol:

What do you guys think?

I like it. What's the sw logo about? I don't suppose that it really matters if the lock and unlock are the wrong way round as long as they work.

Maybe one day I'll be able to make a few. I currently have it on my key ring to see how durable it is.
Due to the way the printer works as well as the resolution that can be printed there are still a few things to be sorted.
You may notice that the printed key is slightly bigger too. This is to beef up the sliding locking mechanism the other end of the screw.
Maybe version 3 will be out next wednesday if I have some spare time with the printer!
