Title: Day time running lights
Post by: Hext007 on January 1, 2017, 09:46
DLR Lights
Just fitted DRL's, have them wired to an ignition live, need to get an MOT this week, anyone had any issues, do you need to install a controller that dims the lights at night? Searched online and found the below, is it correct?

Q       I have just fitted aftermarket DRL lights, with a wiring kit. Will it fail an MOT if DRL dont turn off when headlights are turned on just ive seen new cars that have them on with headlights on.

A
DLRs are designed to make vehicles more visible during daylight hours and are now common on vehicles of testable age. DRLs themselves are not covered by the manual and are therefore not testable items.

As per your own answer they are not covered, although like Rear Fog lights DRL are just a waste of electricity & should be banned again along with RFL

They need to dim by 50% when main lights are switched on

Is that now in the mot test?

Just been on to the gov website regarding this, and found the following, still not 100% as mine are in addition too not replacing, I will ask the mot tester when I book it in, think I will probably get a controller that dims them anyway, but will be after the mot, worse comes to the worst I will just disconnect then install controller.

Daytime running lamps are not testable unless they replace the front position lamps. Where this is the case, they should dim when the position lamps are switched on and may extinguish when the headlamps are switched on.

That sounds open to interpretation by the tester to me.

If it was me and it was easy to do, I would disconnect them before the MOT. They will not be tested so no problem and you will get the controller fitted before the next one.

A tester could decide that as they are fitted, they should dim and if yours dont, they could fail it.

Having had problems and going to VOSA a few years ago over some after market headlights which although approved with e-marks were failed for being too blue.  VOSA werent any use and just said it was up to the tester so dont expect any help there!

My DRL,s came with a relay that automatically turns them off when the dipped headlights turned on.  Simple solution & the car has passed every MOT since they were fitted nearly 4 years ago.  Also, they are one of the best mods I've fitted to the car as other drivers can now see me on the road - before I fitted them I very nearly had a major shunt because someone hadn't seen me approaching.

Which DRLs did you choose?  I would prefer a set with a relay if I was going to fit some (sorry phaeton!)

Now you're asking - it was 4 years ago!  I they are made by 'Ring' and I got them from Halfords.  They are the proper DRL's and not cruising lights.  Check out the details of each product to make sure you get the right ones with a relay.  I've been very pleased with mine.  They are really bright and do the job properly.  See the links which might help.

Hi,

Fitted a FL bumper to my PFL, fitted some of Hamish's DRL / Fogs.

Had option to have them turn off when Head Lights on, but decided to have them stay on as they make it look modern.

Anyhow, had it MOT'd November, never mentioned.

So can't get much more up to date than that.

Enjoy.
